Bayside Romance is the 5th stand-alone novel in the Bayside Summers series by Melissa Foster. The genre this book falls under is second chance romance. Harper and Gavin met 10 months before our story begins at a music festival. They had a one night stand, but the next morning Harper left leaving her number in a pocket in Gavin's suitcase. Gavin did not find it so they ended up thinking that the other party wasn't interested in them, but it was just a misunderstanding. Fast forward 10 months, they meet again and that's how our story begins. On a side note, Gavin misheard Harper when she said her name and thought that her name was Parker.
Bayside Romance could have been one of the best books of 2019 for me. It was super romantic and I loved Gavin and Harper together. But the possibility of this book getting in my "Top 10 books of 2019" was lost early in the book. Gavin admitted to sleeping with a couple of other women after their hookup. Immediately after he said (and I quote): "But they weren't you, so they don't count". Oh no dude, they count. It doesn't matter if they weren't Harper, you chose to sleep with them.
And you know what? I would have been ok with it given the way each thought that their short fling ended. But for the rest of the book we are told over and over and over again how hang up Gavin was on her and how he wasn't a man who slept around and it was frustrating and also I felt like it was a joke. At some point he says (and again I quote): "I never let go of the hope that I'd see you again, and I'm pretty sure I drove Justin crazy talking about Parker... I wasn't interested in the women we met. it got to the point where I'd leave bars early, alone. " So we have a guy who wasn't big on sleeping around and claims that he wasn't interested in women, but actually slept around. That's how you ruin a romance. It's the reason I am going with the 3.5 stars and not the 5 I would have. 10 months is not that much time considering that you have met the love of your life. I was not a Gavin fan since the first 9% of the book.
Harper almost got to do the horizontal dance with a couple of men, but it didn't happen and it's just as frustrating as if she did. As a GR friend says "He got lots of nookie she got none". He had no trouble sleeping around and of course, she had to have the most unpleasant experiences.
I am disappointed with this book. I was expecting much more, and I am tired of having men who sleep around a lot (see Justin in this book for example) get a girl who is unlucky in dating (like his lady says she is in this book). I love Melissa Foster, but lately, I feel like her books are becoming more generic. Maybe Dixie will save the day!
