Out of Line by Jen McLaughlin

Rating 4/5 stars

Desperate to break free…

I've spent my entire life under my father’s thumb, but now I'm finally free to make my own choices. When my roommate dragged me to my first college party, I met Finn Coram and my life turned inside out. He knows how to break the rules and is everything I never knew I wanted. A Marine by day and surfer by night, he pushes me away even as our attraction brings us closer. Now I am finally free to do whatever I want. I know what I want. I choose Finn.

Trying to play by the rules...

I always follow orders. My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She's a rule I know I shouldn't break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

I changed my original 4.5 rating to 4 because while I was writing the review I came up with two problems instead of the 1 I originally had and I couldn't rate it with 4.25 or something similar.

Half star was lost in the end when I found out that there is a book #2, coming on 2014. The end isn't cliffy but some things have yet to happen and I was left with a feeling of unfulfillment. The good thing is that I can see why a second book will be out. Finn and Carrie have some serious problems waiting for them.

I was really happy when Finn's secret was revealed (to the reader, not Carrie) so quickly in the book. I am sure if the average reader would have liked it (or him) if s/he found out the same time as Carrie did.

Why the other half star was cut off? Because of Carrie. In the begging she seemed so smart and was close to the truth but when the revelation came she was acting like the thought hadn't crossed her mind at all.

Out of line was an enjoyable read and a great NA debut for Alberts.
