Saving His Heart is the third book in the Broken Hearts series by Avery Maxwell and it can be read as stand-alone. It's the first book I had the chance to read from this author, but believe me, it won't be the last. As I mentioned, it's a stand-alone, but we got two subplots that are leading to two other books, which haven't been published yet. The author was kind enough to provide some teasers for them and I will gladly read both.
The blurb covers up well what is going on in this book. Even though Em has lost her license, Preston hired her to be his private doctor and help him make his living easier and hide his condition from his family. When his family found out about her, he lied and told them that she is his girlfriend because he didn't want to reveal his secret and ruin his friends' weddings.
I will be completely honest here. The first 1/3 of the book didn't capture my interest much. I started another book, finished it, and then continued reading this one. I don't know if it was the story, or me looking at the book from a new perspective, but I read the rest of it in one sitting. Things picked up and I warmed up to the main and secondary characters. I also ended up crying a lot because Preston's heart kept wearing out and I knew that his time was coming.
Preston and Emory's love is the kind that develops over time and it was not instant. I didn't doubt their love for each other and I could feel Emory's heart, breaking as Preston's was dying out. They well well developed as characters and I found myself relating to both of them. They are not perfect, they have flaws and that makes them even better in my eyes.
I don't know how realistic the book was in terms of Preston's condition and how it was handled and I am not going to bother finding out. I did wonder though why Preston was low on the transplant list when he wasn't even going to make it until the new year.
Overall, the book was a roller coaster of emotions and I would recommend it 100%.
