Blog tour: A Duke by Default (Reluctant Royals #2) by Alyssa Cole

Award-winning author Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series
continues with a woman on a quest to be the heroine of her own story and the duke in shining armor she rescues along the way…
New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.
Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice—and his attraction to her—but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.
Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

Review:

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I am giving 2 stars to the book because no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't finish it. I have been trying to read the book for a month and it didn't work for me, so I stopped at 30%. I couldn't relate to the heroine and that's the biggest reason I wasn't able to read the book further. She had a lot of issues that she needed to solve and I don't think that could happen in this book only. I didn't believe in her project aka Portia #2 and I couldn't understand her past behavior. Tavish's thinking is old-fashioned to a point where I thought that he was more like my grandpa than a man in his mid/late thirties. I couldn't click with either of the main characters and the plot wasn't able to draw me at all. Up until the point I stopped, nothing had happened and the main characters didn't even like each other, so you can add slowness to the list of the things I didn't like in this book.
