Review:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The darkest assassin is a stand alone novella in the Lords of the Underwood series by Gena Showalter. I haven't read the latest books in the series and so, I was a little lost, so I don't believe that readers who are not familiar with the series will enjoy it as much as those who are familiar with what's going on.

In my opinion the novella should have been longer because the ending was rushed and it was a little unbelievable.  I would have preferred to see the characters talk about some of the stuff that happened and a good groove would have been very much appreciated. The beginning was good though and it had a very good pace, which unfortunately only made the ending feel lesser. Overall though, the story wasn't bad. Seeing William and his heroine made things even better in my opinion.

Big and bad enough to be any girl’s nightmare—or her best dream ever…
Beyond your grasp. Those are the three words that come to mind, every time Ella sees Wolf at Club Atlantis. He earns the term Master, in and out of scene, yet there is something deeper and darker about him. She wants to dive into that abyss.
Wolf sees the yearning. But the submissive he ultimately claims will become his servant, soul-bound to him for all eternity. Ella is a natural submissive, with an endless desire to please. She’s perfect for the role, really. Except Ella is a gift he doesn’t deserve.
However, vampires are wired one way—to take what they want, no matter what their conscience tells them. Even Wolf isn’t strong enough to resist his nature . . . or the salvation Ella’s love offers.

Review:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Vampire Master is the 16th(!!!!) novel in the Vampire Queen series by Joey W. Hill. I can not believe how far the series has gone! I read The Vampire Queen's Servant 7 years ago and it was published in 2007, so I kinda left nostalgic. Visiting some of the old characters made me a little nostalgic.

I am a big fan of the series and it pains me to say this, but I found the book a little slow for my taste and I thought that it was dragging at some points. I am not used to books with more than 400 pages anymore (and I have university to hate for that) and maybe that's the reason why. I wouldn't call the writing or the pace bad, but there was a surprisingly small amount of character development for a book this size. There is some, but I felt like it could have been more. Maybe, I touched the book superficially and I should have paid more attention to it, but I kept reading it in every single opportunity I had. On the bus, the break from my work, while waiting in line and in many more places, because there were also some parts that were very good and interesting. It's been a while since I read a novel that's so focused on BDSM and my overall impression is that most of the story happens on the club's grounds.

Still, the book has everything I have come to expect from the series and I am saying that in a positive way. Fans of the supernatural and/or BDSM genre will enjoy the book and despite what one might think from my 3-star rating, I would recommend it to them. It might be a little extreme for a newbie in the genres, but I wouldn't want to prevent those people from also giving this book/series a chance.

Spoiler/trigger warning below.

One thing that I really didn't like was Ella's rape. It's not detailed, but it happened and I thought it was unnecessary. I read Vampire Mistress before this book since the triad from that book appears a lot (Gideon even has a part in the narrative) and if you have read it you know what happened to Anwyn's character, so having Ella go through something like what she did, immediately after reading about the abuse another heroine was recipient felt too much to me. Ella's life, in general, was not a good one and she is a tortured heroine.

Excerpt
She turned toward the door, a light smile pasted on her face. He wore a gold-colored T-shirt and blue jeans. Though the shirt was untucked, she had no doubt he was wearing a belt. He’d pretty much branded that fashion accessory in her brain for the rest of her life. His shaved head gleamed in the soft light, adding shadows to the chiseled features and sparks to the silver gaze. It slid over her, head to toe. “I need to know your boundaries,” he said, before she could say anything. “Are you a sub in here?" With you, I'm always a sub. She didn’t say it, but she suspected it was obvious on her face, from the flicker in his eyes, the flex in his jaw. But she found her words. “Yes, if that’s what you want. If you don’t, I’m just a massage therapist, helping you with problem areas. You can treat me the same way you’d treat a normal masseuse. Or you can treat me as both at once. It’s up to you.” “Both sound good.” He stepped over the threshold. In the cozy little space, he seemed even bigger. She normally maintained a respectful distance from him, which gave her room to gauge what he was wanting. In these close quarters, she had to tip her face up to look at him. She didn’t often look up into a Dom's face until given permission, but in this situation, she felt like he wanted her to do it. He wanted her to feel that difference in size and strength, how much bigger he was than her. She wet her lips. “Is what I’m wearing acceptable, sir?” “For the moment. I’d like you to lose the shorts, though. Wear just the shirt and panties. No bra.” He glanced at himself. “How about me? What do you need me to wear to do this right?” Despite a BDSM club being less modest than other venues, she usually gave clients a little speech to put them at ease about their weight or any other perceived physical flaws. It went something like, “There’s no need for any self-consciousness. During a massage, I don't see the body; I see muscles.” There was no way she could say that to Wolf with a straight face, so she redacted that line in her head before it made it anywhere close to her lips. “You’ve never had a massage?” “No.” That knowledge helped her click back into her role, pull together some of the focus that his presence had scattered so effectively. “Well, it’s up to you. Most guests prefer to be completely unclothed so there’s no impediment to the massage, but if you prefer to leave on underwear, I can work with that, no problem. I do put a heated sheet over you as a cover, and I only fold it back from the area I’m working on.” “I tend to run hot. Is having the cover a requirement?” “Not really. You’ll be lying on a heated pad, which helps the muscle relaxation, but I can take the heated blanket off the top entirely after a couple minutes, if you prefer that.” “Okay, then.” He pulled off his T-shirt, the stretch of his muscled upper torso capturing her gaze and not letting it go. The arch of his body was exaggerated because, in the small space, he had to straighten his arms more than normally would be necessary, to keep from rapping her with his elbows. Her palms itched to press against the ripple of chest and abdomen muscles, the sides of his waist. All well within reach. Just as she’d known, he was wearing a belt. When he started to unbuckle the plain silver buckle, she turned to busy herself elsewhere. “Look at me, Ella. You have my permission.” Treat it like a session, she thought. A session that any Dom could request from her, that she could approve or not. Though the wisdom of not engaging with him was starting to become painfully clear, she knew she wouldn’t refuse him. No matter the plea echoing in her mind, her heart. Don’t let me get pulled so deeply into him. Don’t let me get trapped in that lonely sea of finding everything I want there, but nothing that wants me back.

About Joey W. Hill

Joey W Hill PicJoey W. Hill writes about vampires, mermaids, boardroom executives, cops, witches, angels, simple housemaids . . . pretty much wherever inspiration takes her. She's penned over forty acclaimed titles and six award-winning series, and been awarded the RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award for Erotica. But she's especially proud and humbled to have won the support and enthusiasm of a wonderful, widely diverse readership.
So why erotic romance? “Writing great erotic romance is all about exploring the true face of who we are – the best and worst - which typically comes out in the most vulnerable moments of sexual intimacy.” She has earned a reputation for writing BDSM romance that not only wins her fans of that genre, but readers who would “never” read BDSM romance. She believes that's because strong, compelling characters are the most important part of her books.
“Whatever genre you’re writing, if the characters are captivating and sympathetic, the readers are going to want to see what happens to them. That was the defining element of the romances I loved most and which shaped my own writing. Bringing characters together who have numerous emotional obstacles standing in their way, watching them reach a soul-deep understanding of one another through the expression of their darkest sexual needs, and then growing from that understanding into love - that's the kind of story I love to write."
Take the plunge with her, and don't hesitate to let her know what you think of her work, good or bad. She thrives on feedback!

Review:
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
House of Scarlett is the second book in the Legend Trilogy by Meghan March and it's not a stand-alone book. Scarlett and Legend's story began in The Fall of Legend, continues in this book and it will end in The Fight for Forever. I wouldn't recommend skipping the first book because the characters were introduced there and the story of this book is the continuation of the one from The Fall of Legend. The book picks right from where we left off and with me wondering how Gabe was going to going to fix the situation he forced himself into. I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say that in this book the plotlines from the previous book are been expanded and developed in order to have their climax in the finale.
Since I am now familiar with the characters and the situations they are in, I was able to enjoy more this installment and I have to say that it was a fun and worrisome ride. Things are not easy for Gabe and Scarlett and I couldn't stop turning the pages wanting to find out what was going to happen next. The story was interesting, but I have to say that a specific turn of events was surprising and I thought that it slowed things a little bit down. Still, there wasn't a moment where I considered myself bord. So far the trilogy has been a winner for me and I would recommend it!

Excerpt:

“What’s your favorite movie?”
“Of all time?” he asks.
“Pick one from the past ten years.”
“I can’t,” he says. “There are so many great ones, and I love them all for different reasons. I love the technical aspect of Birdman. I love the performances in Call Me by Your Name. Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite cartoon because Wes Anderson is a goddamn genius.” He glances at me. “What about you?”
“I don’t think Fantastic Mr. Fox counts. It seems older than ten years.” I lean my head back and stare up at the ceiling. It’s a tough question. “I’m like you. I don’t know that I have a favorite movie. I tend to judge more on the talent than the story line. I think Emma Stone is probably my favorite actress. And Adam Driver is the best actor of our time, but I don’t think he’s landed the role of his lifetime yet. He was great in BlacKkKlansman, but I’m not crazy about some of the other movies he’s been in.”
“But did you see the Kylo Ren skit?”
“Yes!” I say, sitting up. “On SNL? Oh my God, it was so funny.” I’m smiling, but I hate that I’m smiling. It feels weird to smile when I’m so full of sadness, but this is how Miller makes me feel every time I’m around him. He’s the only thing that seems to be able to take my mind off everything, yet he’s the one person I can’t really hang out with.
Thanks for that, Shelby.
It sucks. I don’t like thinking about it, even though we’re together right now. But tomorrow at school, things will go back to how they always are. Miller will keep his distance. He’ll respect his relationship with Shelby, which will only serve to make me respect him even more.
And I’ll just continue to be in a depressing funk.
“I should go,” I say.
Miller hesitates before moving. “Yeah, I think my break was over ten minutes ago.” We both stand up, but I can’t get out of the aisle because he’s blocking my way, facing me, not making an effort to walk away. He’s just staring down at me as if he wants to say something else. Or do something else.
“I’m really sorry about what happened,” he says. At first, I’m not sure what he’s talking about, but then it hits me. I press my lips together and nod, but I don’t say anything because it’s the last thing I want to talk or think about.
“I should have said that the other day. At the funeral.”
“It’s fine,” I say. “I’m fine. Or at least I’ll be fine. Eventually.” I sigh. “Hopefully.”
He’s staring at me like he wants to pull me in for a hug, and I really wish he would. But instead, he turns and walks out of the aisle, toward the exit. I stop at the restroom on our way out. He grabs a trash can and starts to pull it toward the theater we just came out of.
“See you tomorrow, Clara.”
I don’t tell him goodbye. I walk into the restroom and don’t even bother pretending things will be the same at school tomorrow as they were tonight. He’ll avoid me while being all faithful and shit, and whatever. That’s okay. I need to stop interacting with him anyway, because as good as it feels when I’m around him, it’s starting to hurt when I’m not. And I don’t need another painful thing added to my already existing pile of excruciating feelings.“What’s your favorite movie?”

Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Wonder With Me is a novella in the With Me in Seattle series by Kristen Proby. It's listed as book 12.5 and it can be read as stand-alone. If you are not a fan of the books where the hero and the heroine have that instant attraction/lust/whatever I don't think you will like this book. It's short so the timeline is shorter than usual. Personally, I didn't have a problem with that and I enjoyed the book. It's a perfect novella to read in order to get into Christmas mood. There was something that made me hesitate when it came to Reed and Noel's relationship and that's the reason why I am not giving 5 stars to the book. A piece didn't fall exactly into place and I didn't love the novella, I simply liked it. Piper was a lovely secondary character and it was nice to have her around. Overall, I would recommend the book without hesitation.

Review:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

The boyfriend blog is a stand-alone novel written by. The story follows Aiden and Lizzie who are best friends and are about to become more.

I would have liked the novel more if I didn't have such a strong dislike for the heroine. I couldn't stand her after a while. When she said that Aiden had done something in the past to make her not want to become something more than friends with him I immediately thought that it would be something silly and she would have blown it out of proportion. Was I right? You can find out if/when you read the book. Lizzie has the tendency to overreact to every single situation. When Aiden explained what drove him to act as he did in the past, I was expecting her to understand but she got very angry instead. I have said it for some heroines and now I will say it for Aiden too. You took her back way too easily man. Where is the groove? People and their feelings.... *shakes head*. When she said that he should have known even drunk that it wasn't Emily (her twin) the one standing in front of him because she was his best for so long I kinda lost it and I knew I couldn't jump on the liking Lizzie train ever again. Two of my friends are twins and still, on a rare occasion their parents mix them up. It can happen even to the best of us.

I was wishing that Aiden would find someone else even for a little while, just to get to Lizzie's face. Most of the book is him chasing
her and I wanted to see the tables reversed even for a little while. It was annoying seeing her going to dates with other
men, while he was just pinning for her and was having her turning him down at every chance he had.

The book could have been better in my opinion, but it wasn't bad. I did finish it after all. I just disliked the heroine, so while I wouldn't recommend the book, I also wouldn't not recommend it.

The Boyfriend Blog
August 29, 2015
Boyfriend wanted: Loyal and funny. Wait…I just described a dog. I should buy a dog.
For real, though, Loyal and funny, that’s easy enough, right? Wrong! Do you ever ask yourself why dating in today’s society is so hard? Or where all the good guys are? Or what happened to dating before sex and *gasp* chivalry? I wish I had the answers to those questions for you, but I don’t. Unfortunately, I’m scratching my head and wondering the same things you are, which is how I ended up here in the first place. I never thought I’d be a blogger—especially one who writes about men and dating—and really, I’m not; I’m just a twenty-something girl who got her heart broken for the first time and, while drowning myself in a pint of cookie dough ice cream, thought to myself: Self, how many other girls out there are doing this exact thing? How many of us are loading up on carbs and sugar while mentally berating humans of the penis-wielding variety? I know I can’t be the only one. After proposing that same question to my sister, she suggested that I blog about it. So, whether you’re like me and are swallowing past the bitter first taste of a broken heart, or you’re on your tenth helping and somehow keep finding the courage to go back for more, this blog is for you. Let me start out by saying you are not alone. Louder for the sobbing girl in the back: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Sit down, buckle up, and let’s enjoy this crazy ride of bad dating apps and even worse dates together. P.S. Men suck. And not in a good way. XOXO, Liz

Review:

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Best Man is Katy Evans' newest stand-alone novel. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of it, but others might like it. The fault on me not liking the book falls mostly on me because my brain understood something else while reading the blurb and not what actually whoever wrote the blurb meant. I thought that Lia would marry Aaron for convenience and not that she was in love with him or had been in a relationship with him for a long time. Miles would end up taking his place and the story would go on. She went on about how much she couldn't wait to marry Aaron, that she had slept with him a thousand times (wtf face here) and we got some more info on how they met. So basically, the book has cheating. There is a lot of cheating going on in this book. One of my biggest problems in the books lately is that heroines tent to go from loving one man (been married to him or almost married) one day to been in love with another the next day. At least Lia managed to do something for herself. She went from the "I can't wait to marry this man" to "Yeah, things were not so good" in a short time. I was not happy with the book and I could barely finish it.

Excerpt:
The dress is a strapless Carolina Herrera, with layers and layers of whisper-thin organza. It blows my budget and the “less is more” mantra out of the water, but like Eva said the day we bought it in downtown Denver, when you know, you know. The locale is the sumptuous Midnight Lodge, nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, every tiny detail of the place costing my father more than an entire year of his salary. The twenty-three members of the bridal party are assembled. It’s the scene of every little girl’s fairytale fantasy. My fantasy. At least, the one I’d been harboring up until today, when everything changed. Eva smiles at me. “Ready to make your dreams come true?” I stare at myself in the mirror. I look like Cinderella, if the wicked stepmother had just materialized at the castle on Cinderella’s wedding day and gunned down Prince Charming in cold blood. I’m also about three minutes away from losing the mimosa I’d polished off earlier that morning at breakneck speed. I go to chew on my nails but then I remember Eva painted them, and the last thing I want is for him to see the chips. He notices things like that. He’s an observer. And I want to be perfect for him. Him. The wrong him. Oh, god. I go to chew on my lip, but I can’t do that because they’ve been lacquered with bubble-gum pink gloss, and he’d probably notice if I got it on my teeth, too. All my normal ways of freaking out are off limits. This is the day of my dreams, the day I’ve planned to the letter, just so I could avoid any potential calamities that might make me freak out. But I am freaking out. Oh, lordy, am I ever. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day. This perfect day, where the sun is shining, the snow is melting, birds are singing, and the sky is the deepest blue I’ve ever seen. But there’s a problem. A problem in the form of a pretentious, bearded, six-foot-three wall of hot man flesh who stalks around hating the world and thinking he’s better than everyone in it. My fiancé’s best friend. The best man, Miles Foster. This is all his fault. “You okay?” Eva asks. “I am,” I insist, pushing the infernal veil out of my face for the thousandth time. “This dress is itchy as hell.” I stand and pluck the dress up under my armpits, hoisting it over my boobs. I try to take a step but…too much fabric, in all directions. It’s a wonder I don’t drown in this sea. In this sea, or in this mess I’ve created for myself. I sit back down on the vanity stool and pout. “I’m stuck.” In more ways than one. She gathers handfuls of too much organza and helps me up, depositing the pile of fabric safely in my wake. I shuffle to the full-length mirror and glance at myself. I don’t look like a bride, or even a fairytale princess. I look like a prisoner who just got her death sentence. “It’s too loose,” I whine. I never had much of a rack, and now it’s super obvious. Why did I decide to go strapless again? “I think I must’ve lost some boobage during my diet. What if the top of my dress falls down while I’m walking up the aisle?” Eva smirks. “I’m sure Aaron’ll love the show.” The thought makes the mimosa turn in my stomach. I used to live for what Aaron thought. Whenever I had a choice to make on something, be it a new movie coming out, or a sweater at the mall, or a new hair style, I’d think, Would Aaron like this? But I realize, as she says his name, that it doesn’t matter to me in the slightest what Aaron thinks. The only opinion I care about now is that of the man who will be standing precisely two feet to my husband-to-be’s left. I am such an idiot. In less than fifteen minutes, I will be marching down the stone steps outside the Midnight Lodge to a picturesque gazebo at the foot of the hills, on the arm of my father, who has socked his entire life’s savings into making this day picture perfect for his only daughter. I will take the hand of the man I’ve been attached at the hip to for over five years, ever since I met him in a dank frat cellar when I was a wide-eyed little college freshman. I will join with this man—this man I’ve spent all of my adult life with—in holy matrimony, ’til death us do part. I will become Mrs. Aaron Eberhart. But I know I’ll be looking past my husband-to-be to the man who, up until twelve hours ago, I’d thought I hated. Miles Foster. And I will be wondering What if… I wish choosing a husband was as simple as choosing a dress. When you know, you know. I did know, or I thought I did. Up until twelve hours ago, I thought Aaron Eberhart was my true soul mate, the one I’d happily spend the rest of my life with. That’s when things took an unexpected turn. Right now? I don’t even know my own name. And I have a feeling I might be making a huge mistake.
