Review: Lord of Fortune (Legendary Rogues #3) by Darcy Burke

SBPR-BT-BANNER

Lord_of_Fortune_1800x2700

Lord of Fortune, an all-new historical and romantic standalone from Darcy Burke is LIVE!

Dashing adventurer Penn Bowen is dedicated to preserving Britain’s history and his carefree, bachelor lifestyle. He’s happiest when he’s in pursuit of knowledge and the occasional liaison with the right woman. So he’s more than a little perturbed when the wrong woman inserts herself into his latest quest—proving that a valuable artifact in Oxford’s museum is a fake. Amelia Gardiner is smart and capable...and determined to prove that Penn is wrong about the treasure her grandfather found.
Amelia won’t allow Penn to denigrate her family’s legacy, and she certainly won’t join the ranks of women who throw themselves at his feet. As secretive and dangerous factions infiltrate their hunt, Amelia and Penn must work together to stay one step ahead. But passion ignites between them and suddenly their alliance is more than a simple convenience. When peril strikes too close, they’ll risk everything they hold dear: family, honor, and a chance for the greatest treasure of all—love.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I am a big fan of stories that include treasure hunts and this one is full of it, it was an interesting journey and the ride was easy and I was mostly happy as a whole. The main characters were flawed, but their chemistry was good enough to redeem that. The pace wasn't too fast or too slow for me, though I wish the relationship between the main characters had been a little more developed and that the characters had begun having romantic intentions towards each other sooner. I will happily wait for Gideon's book because the poor guy had the rug pulled from under his feet and he handled things very well. The book is not of my favorites from this author, but it was good. To be fair I had no problem reading the book, but I just didn't love it as much as the other which is the reason I am giving it 3.5 stars

Excerpt

Penn enjoyed watching her animated expression change as she’d relayed the tale. “You’re a romantic.”
Her brow pleated for a moment. “Not particularly.”
He wasn’t sure he believed her, but he’d have to take her word for it since he barely knew her. Though he hoped they were rectifying that.
He did?
Did he hope to know her better? Certainly, if it meant gathering information he needed to find the real heart and dagger. As to that—he needed to convince her to accept his partnership, especially if the Order was involved. “The Order’s primary objective is to keep the Thirteen Treasures—and really anything to do with them—from being found or publicized. They want them to remain a legend.”
“But one of them is in a museum.”
He lifted his right shoulder. “Or not.”
She rolled her eyes and pursed her lips. “Does the Order agree with that assessment?”
“I can’t say for certain—let me be clear: I am not a member. Members are, for the most part, descendants of the knights.”
“How can that be possible if it’s all a legend?”
“The Order wants everyone to think it’s all a legend. I didn’t say they believed that.”
Mr. Tarleton returned with Penn’s breakfast.
After the innkeeper left, Mrs. Forrest shook her head. “That seems ridiculous. What is their reasoning?”
“That the treasures are too powerful, that if they were to be found, they would cause strife and conflict.” He sliced off a piece of ham and brought it to his mouth.
“War?” She stared at him a moment, and her shoulder twitched as if she suppressed a shiver. “My grandfather told me once that he gave the heart to the museum because it was far too valuable to keep. He feared someone would steal it.”
Penn relaxed slightly. Her sharing such a thing with him was progress.
Her brow furrowed once more and stayed that way as she spoke. “What he said in the letter… Was he afraid of this Order? Do I need to be concerned?”
It was the perfect opportunity to bind her to him, to encourage her reliance, but he’d also said he wouldn’t lie. “You do not need to be afraid. Concern, or wariness, is always a good thing. Even if you decide to associate with me.”
She gave him a dark but curious stare. “And what do I need to be wary about with you?”
He didn’t think she meant any sort of innuendo, but his brain took that route automatically. Lout. “I don’t plan to steal anything from you. I merely want to share information so that we may get to the heart—pardon the pun—of the matter.”
She rolled her eyes again, but this time, the edge of her mouth ticked up with humor. He suppressed a smile before taking another bite of ham.
After he swallowed, he said, “I only meant that being guarded will serve you well. That said, you can trust me.”
She let out a short laugh. “One of the first things you said to me was that you didn’t trust me, and now you expect me to trust you?”
He had said that, blast. And he’d meant it. Did he trust her now? Not completely. But then the list of those he trusted completely was quite succinct—his parents and his sister. “How about we give it a try?”
There was something about her… Something he wanted to discover. She, like all women, was a mystery. The difference was that he wanted to investigate this one.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I don't know why, but I got an arc for this book and not for book one. I decided not to buy the first book and I began reading this one. I did not feel like I had missed something because from what I gathered, the story is the usual deception one. The characters have left the States and they are back in their country. Sebastian knows the truth and he is not happy. Penny is trying to salvage the whole situation and continue working as a guard.

If you ask me, whatever romance you could get from Penny and Sebastian's story, you are going to get it from the first book. In this one, you will get mostly cold and hot behaviors and it drove me crazy. First, it's Sebastian the one who is cold and wants nothing to do with Penny and then it's Penny. I was not very happy with that. The characters didn't spend much time romancing each other. The ending was good, but it didn't feel like the royal fairytale couple. The epilogue was sweet and my favorite part of the book. It will also kind of fun.

Review: Co-Ed by Rachel Van Dyken

COED-SBPRBANNER-BT.jpg

Co-Ed by Rachel Van Dyken Publication Date: April 24th, 2018 Genre: Contemporary Romance

rvd-coed_1

Four guys.
Constant moaning.
And a revolving door across the college suite I somehow ended up in because my first name is Shawn.
They don't discriminate. Girls. Guys. Grandmas. Plants (okay maybe not plants) all walks of life stroll in stressed to the brim, and leave so satisfied I'm wondering what sort of talents lie behind that door.
My roommate calls them the pleasure ponies.
But the rest of the college campus?
They just call them the new face of Wingmen Inc. A paid for relationship service that makes big promises.
Breakup? They'll glue you back together again.
Depressed? They have the magic pill.
Lonely? Just spend a few minutes while they rub you down and you'll forget all about it.
And broken hearts? Well, that's their specialty. They'll fix you
For a price…
I swore I wouldn't get involved.
But apparently they like a challenge, and a girl who doesn't put up with their BS is basically like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
They. All. Charged.
But one holds my attention above the rest.
Knox Turner looks like a Viking — and getting pillaged is starting to look more appealing by the day. Though he's hiding something — all of them are. And the closer I get. The more I realize that some things are left better in the past.
You've read reverse harem books before — but you've never read one like this. It's not what you think, or is it? Dive in and find out…
Knox, Leo, Finn, and Slater are waiting, and they aren't patient men.
Welcome to the new face of Wingmen Inc — You're welcome.

Review:
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I have mixed feelings for Co-Ed. I was expecting the reverse harem situation to be more tame and for Shawn to get her guy way earlier in the book. We had reached the 30% mark and the only man who had seen the heroine naked was Leo. Honestly, if that shower scene had happened to me, Leo wouldn't have any balls for the rest of his life. And the fact that he saw her naked is brought up a lot which didn't serve anything if you ask me. Shawn and Knox took too much time before they got together and that was a shame. I wanted more romance between them and some time with just the two of them. I feel like their relationship was sacrificed to a certain level in order to have the other guys in the story.

I hadn't even realized that the heroine was not white until she brought it up as the main reason she broke up with her last boyfriend. So, I went and checked the cover of the book again and I realized that indeed she wasn't and I had somehow managed to miss that. Slater's reason for hating the other 3 guys was a little too predictable for my liking and like Shawn, I thought he was gay. I would like to see the other guys get a book, but for now, the book is not listed as a part of a series.

I liked that for once one of Rachel's heroes is not a manwhore and was actually celibate for the last three years. It was refreshing and one of the good parts of the book. I would recommend the book, but I am warning you that it's not as good as the usual RVD books.

Excerpt:
It was happening again. The moaning. I put a pillow over my face and screamed. Not because it was too loud. But because I kept wondering who was causing it. One? Two? All three? Leo and Finn had both tried to talk to me in class and at the coffee shop again. I’d brushed them off but been polite. And Knox? Well, let’s just say that Knox had suddenly turned over a leaf that said, “Go out of my way to make Shawn’s life miserable.” He was suddenly everywhere. And with a different female every single day. It drove me insane. Bat-shit crazy. And he wasn’t even mine to go senseless over! The moan happened again. “That’s it!” I got up from my bed, stomped over to the door, and jerked it open. Then I pounded my way over to their room and almost took down the door with my knock . When Leo answered, he grinned down at me. “Come to play?” I gave him the finger. His eyes narrowed. “I’m confused. Is that yes or no?” “Agh!” I threw my hands up in the air. “I have practice tomorrow at five a.m. It’s three. I’ve had one hour of sleep. Can you please keep the moaning to a minimum?” “You seem stressed.” He tilted his head just as Finn joined him in the doorway. “Doesn’t she?” “Very.” Finn nodded then reached out and started massaging my right trap while Leo grabbed my hand and worked my fingers. It felt so damn good that I forgot I was pissed for about two seconds before I pulled away. “No.” I jabbed my finger at each of their chests. “Shame on you. Stop using your skills to make me less crazy. I need sleep.” “I could not agree more.” Leo put his hand over his chest. “If you want, I can come over and—” “No!” I made a fist with my hands. “I don’t need you to help me sleep. I need you to keep your clients quiet so that I can sleep. Big difference.” Knox appeared then and held out a pair of Bose noise-canceling headphones. “You can borrow them every Friday as long as you don’t set them on fire when you’re done.” “Do you think I really want whatever STDs are crawling around the surface?” I hissed. His eyes turned lethal. “Then I guess you won’t sleep.” “Dun, dun, dun,” Finn sang in a low voice, just as a small lady who could pass as my grandmother made an appearance and shoved a fifty-dollar bill in Knox’s pants then patted him on his rock-hard six-pack. She had a full-on red wig perched backward on her head and cherry red cheeks with black glasses that she kept shoving up her nose. And her purse looked like something I would have seen on I Love Lucy. It was this giant black clutch that probably held cough drops and prunes. “Thanks, boys.” “Love you, Edna!” Finn called while Leo brushed a kiss across her hand. She finger-waved at Knox and straight-up waddled out of the suite. I stared after her, my jaw dropping with each step she took until she was out of eyesight. “What…” I shook my head. “…I mean, seriously, guys, what?” Finn’s eyes got serious. “She’s lonely.” “She’s at least eighty!” I yelled, so exhausted I was actually arguing with crazy. Knox got all up in my business and said through clenched teeth, “Her husband died a year ago. She’s not comfortable with internet dating yet. We’re easing her in because she wants a partner for life, someone she can laugh with, so if we can give her that one laugh, that nice touch once a week, we’re going to fucking do it. Now jump off that pedestal, take the damn Bose, and go to sleep.”

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I knew from the beginning that the book was going to end with a cliffhanger and I thought I knew how it would end, but I was wrong. Everything is a mess and I worry about every single thing. I hope that things will be alright in the next book and there will be a united front made from Becks and Ryan. I cannot say much because I might accidentally spoil the story for ya.

The last few sentences explain a lot of things that happened previously in the story and at the time didn't make any sense and they set up the plot for the second book.

Becks is an unusual character and he might be a hit or miss. He is cold. Like Reyna, I only got glimpses of who he truly was and only late in the book we found out who he truly was. Still,  I was drawn to him and I liked him. I wanna see more of the man behind the mask. Reyna has both bad and good qualities. Some times she is weak and others she is kicking arse. She stood up foe herself once in a while. I liked her. She's only the only person who tells the story. So we get to see the world for the first time as she does.

The book is not very paranormal-y, so the people who don't like the genre won't have a problem with it and both parties can enjoy the book.

That was the moment Beckham appeared in the doorway like a storm cloud. Reyna straightened in her seat at the expression on his face. He walked across the room like a tightly coiled spring ready to explode. “Ah Beckham, there you are,” Harrington said. “Excuse me, William. I need to speak with Reyna. Alone.” She hastened out of her seat and followed him around the corner. He tugged her straight through the kitchens, out the back door, down a corridor, and into a dead end. Then her back was slammed against the brick wall. His fist connected with the wall behind her, and she felt the wall shudder. Debris floated onto her shoulders. “You left,” he growled. “I . . .” “No.” He pressed his finger to her lips roughly. She stopped breathing and just stared up into his eyes as dark as night. Her body trembled under the feral stare. “You left without me.” The silence was weighted. All she could do was sit with their bodies nearly touching. His finger on her mouth. Her mind wandering to hellacious places. “You are my subject. Can you imagine what it was like when I found you missing? When you turned up with three of my kind?” She shook her head minutely. He bared his teeth to her, and she shrank back. “These are meant to drink your blood. To drink you dry until there is nothing left of your body but a dry corpse. We are killers. We don’t hesitate. Just because we’re wearing suits and seem more like you . . . does not mean we are like you. We are not like you. They especially are not like you. The only way you get to the top of Visage is to be fucking ruthless, Reyna. Do you understand?” “You’re . . . scaring me,” she whispered. “Good.”

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I cannot believe this is the first book in the series. I felt like the characters were already established, but that wasn't a bad thing. It's a bonus because now I will get to read the stories of all the characters I liked. The book was good. I am not giving it 5 stars because I felt like Jill and Lucas's relationship wasn't in the spotlight as much as it should have been. Jill dates another man for quite some time and that ruined the plans for me and Lucas. Lucas is a stubborn man, but then so is she. He doesn't want any kind of commitment and she wants her happily ever after. Lucas is the kind of man who once went for the happily ever after, but a bam happened and now he lives a care and commitment-free life. I understood why he lived like that and I liked how much his character developed. The story was good and mostly to my liking. The main characters have chemistry and I liked how their relationship developed. The angst wasn't much and overall is a story many of you will enjoy.

Noelle Adams

On Monday morning, Jill overslept.
She set her alarm for seven, but it was seven thirty-five when she finally woke up. As soon as she registered the time, she flew out of bed and ran to the bathroom.
She hated being late. As much as it annoyed her when other people were late, she hated it even more when it was her.
She took a three-minute shower, grabbed an outfit that wouldn’t take any effort to pull together—a knee-length A-line dress in a vintage print—and snatched a handful of jewelry that might possibly work with it. She’d barely gotten her shoes on before she was rushing into the kitchen to get some coffee.
Michelle was at the counter with her laptop as she always was, eating cereal and working. But what surprised Jill was finding that Lucas was up too.
He didn’t have to work. He didn’t have a schedule. He could still be in bed.
But there he was, sitting at the counter with a cup of coffee, putzing on his phone. Wearing nothing but a pair of old sweatpants. His hair was mussed, he needed to shave, and he wasn’t wearing a shirt.
So the first thing Jill saw as she came into the kitchen was a whole lot of gorgeous male back and shoulders and arms.
She didn’t need to see that this morning.
She dumped her pile of jewelry on the counter as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
Morning,” Lucas said, sounding friendly and casual.
What was he even doing up this early?
And why did he have to sound so awake? Awake and masculine. Awake and masculine and sexy.
First thing on a Monday morning.
She did her best to suppress a snarl.
You’re running late,” Michelle said, without looking up from her laptop. “Did you oversleep?”
I don’t want to talk about it.” Jill was trying to drink her coffee and put on her earnings, bracelets, necklace, and rings at the same time.
Lucas was watching her with laid-back interest in his green eyes.
She tried not to snarl at him again.
His eyebrows went up slightly, and she realized she must not have done a good job at the suppression.
She turned her back to him, reaching into the cupboard for a breakfast bar. She preferred to eat cereal, but she didn’t have time this morning. She kept her back to Lucas as she gulped down more of her coffee.
You missed a button.”
She stiffened, glancing over her shoulder to verify that Lucas had been talking to her. “What?”
You missed a button.” He gestured toward her dress. “You want me to get it?”
I can get it,” she gritted out, contorting her arms until she could feel which button on the back of her dress was undone. Discovering it, she stretched her shoulders painfully so she could button it.
When she glanced back over at Lucas, she saw that his mouth was tilted up slightly.
He was laughing at her. Silently but definitely laughing.
She didn’t try to hide her snarl this time.
He didn’t have to be up and dressed and at work by eight in the morning. He didn’t have to sit there in her kitchen, looking smug and gorgeous and amused and irresistibly rumpled when she could barely pull it together.
What kind of malicious turn of fate had made him her roommate at all?
When she’d managed her button, she poured more coffee into her cup and took it with her, grabbing her bag on her way out as she left.
She did remember to mumble out a “See you later,” before she closed the door.
It was just the first Monday morning of Lucas living in her apartment.
It was going to be a long six months.

Review: Betting the Scot (The Highlanders of Balforss #2) by Jennifer Trethewey

About the Book:

Declan Sinclair is a Highlander who believes his dreams never lie. When he spots Caya at a public house, he knows instantly she is the woman in his dreams—his future wife. Though her brother had promised never to gamble again, he engages Declan in a card game—and the prize is the lovely Caya.

Caya Pendarvis has no time for childish things like dreams or fairy-tales or love. She’s the sacrificial lamb on her way to the far north of Scotland to wed a wealthy merchant in exchange for settling her brother’s gambling debts.

Winning at cards is one of the many things Declan Sinclair does well. Unfortunately, the ability to court a woman—a talent he lacks—is the only skill he desperately needs to win Caya’s heart.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Betting the Scot was mostly a good book. I loved the hero because he was so dedicated to the heroine and even when he was awkwardly trying to convince Caya to give him I chance by telling her all the wrong things I couldn't help but love him. I didn't get frustrated when he did all that. Instead, I got frustrated with the heroine because she made no sense to me and she kept pushing Declan away. Let me give you an example. Another man proposes to her and she is thinking about it. Then she thinks of Declan's future wife and how jealous she would be and ends up saying that she wanted to be that wife and stuff like that. After that, she decided to accept the other man's proposal. Does this make sense to you? Because it doesn't to me. The author wrote wonderfully her hero, but the heroine needed more work and that's the reason I am giving the book 4 stars. The rest of the story was good and I would like to read in the future the rest of the series. I would recommend the book.

Excerpt from BETTING THE SCOT:

She smiled. “I live here now. I’m your wife.”

His mouth hung open. Did he not believe her? Did he not understand her? Or had he changed his mind? “You do still want me to be your wife, don’t you?”

An odd look appeared on Declan’s face. One she couldn’t interpret. “Well now,” he said. “That all depends.”

“Depends on what?” Oh, God. Was he changing his mind? Did he wake up and realize she was a fool for trying to save her brother?

“I ken you love me, but I need a wife who will trust me,” he said and took a step closer. “I ken it’s a hard thing for you to trust given all the lies your brother had told you. And me, I was wrong to take you from him the way I did. I gave more thought to my daft dreams than I did for your happiness and I’m sorry for that, but…”

“But what?” Hot tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.

“When I thought you were lost to me, when I thought I’d never see you again, I knew that I loved you more than my own life. I was ready to toss my life away to save you. That’s how much I want you, need you, love you.” He held out his hand just like that fateful morning in front of the Crown Tavern. “So, I’m asking you, do you trust me?”

Magnolia Ellington is all too aware that dangerous things can come in shiny packages. Her husband made sure to teach her that.

Desperate to escape his wrath—and his fists—she flees in the dark of night. Seeking safety and shelter with the only family she has left, Magnolia finds herself in the sleepy, Southern town of Dogwood—and in the arms of Simon McAllister.

Simon has always been more of a thinker than a doer. That changes the minute he meets shy and mysterious Magnolia. She has him rushing into action, ready and willing to do whatever it takes to earn her trust.

Slowly, with his steadfast determination and kind heart, Simon brings Magnolia out of her shell. But just as things start heating up between the two of them, the darkness of Magnolia’s past resurfaces, threatening to rip apart everything they’ve worked so hard for.

With their future hanging in the balance, Simon fears he’s losing Magnolia. Now, he must convince her that, together, they can weather the storm.

Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The thing I loved the most about this book was the characters. The hero is almost perfect. He was always trying to take care of the heroine and he understood as much as he could what she went through, so he acted accordingly. I loved how he was always trying to protect her and show her that she was precious and how much she was worth. He is a great character and I couldn't help but fall for him. The heroine struggled for most of the book because of her abusive ex. She is slowly becoming a stronger person who has stepped out of the shadow her abuser cast on her. She is protective of the others and she blossoms as time passes. You should read the book just because of them. The story is good and it has a nice pace. The main characters from the previous books appear and I liked them. If the series continues I will read the future books.

Excerpt

I jolt awake, momentarily disoriented by the rhythmic beeping coming from my right. Beep. Beep. Beep. Again and again, the sound causes my temples to throb. Even though my eyes are still pinched closed, I know this is not my room, and I am not in my bed. Without warning, the events that led me here flash through my mind: hitting Simon’s truck and the subsequent ambulance ride. I remember the CT scan, and being given pain medication. I must have fallen asleep shortly after that.
I inhale deeply, trying to get my bearings, and cringe at the smell of antiseptic hanging in the air. God, I hate hospitals.
Slowly, I try to blink my eyes open, only to immediately close them again. Whimpering at the brightness of the room, I sink farther into the small, firm mattress before steeling my resolve to try again.
I peel one lid open and hold it, adjusting, before peeling the other open as well. “So bright,” I whine to myself, squinting up at the light above me. My head feels like an entire drumline has taken it as their practice space; the thrumming and pounding is incessant.
With all the strength I can muster, I roll my head to face the far wall of the small hospital room, only to startle at the sight of the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on sleeping in the chair in the corner, his light-brown hair messy, his chiseled jaw covered in stubble. “S-Simon?” I whisper, more to myself than to him.
All the same, he jolts like someone took a live wire to his skin. “You’re up?” He lunges from the chair toward me, gently taking my hand in his, scanning my body before bringing his deep-blue eyes to mine. “Are you—fuck, you have no idea how happy I am to see those baby-blue eyes right now. Let me call for your doctor.”
He starts to withdraw his hand from mine, and I let out the most pathetic whimper, halting him. “Don’t go,” I beg.
“Not going anywhere. Just gonna hit the call button,” he assures me, leaving me feeling foolish, even though that wasn’t his intention.
