Blurb:

A Masters of the Shadowland Novel:

A discharged Army Ranger, Ben considers his job as a BDSM club security guard to be an excellent hobby. He’s never been tempted to join in. But everything changes when the notorious Mistress Anne inadvertently reveals the caring heart concealed beneath her Domme armor. Now, he’s set his sights on the beautiful Shadowlands Mistress. Maybe he’d considered himself vanilla, but she can put her stiletto on his chest any day, any time. He’ll trust her delicate hands to hold his heart. And if she wants to whip his ass on the way to an outstanding climax, he’s just fine with that too. Sure, he knows she likes “pretty boy” slaves. And he’s older. Craggy and rough. And six-five. Minor hindrances. The mission is a go.

Review:

Even if I didn't like the story I think I would have given this book a 5 star rating because we see how Kim and Raoul's relationship is going through Kim's point of view. They are my favorite couple in the series and I love them so much! They have made so much progress! (Not that the other couple's haven't). I hope we will see them more. To be fair, I love all the couples in the series, but Kim and Raoul have a special place in my heart. Master Z and Jessica are finally parents! The birth is funny in some parts. My favorite part was the first time the parents got to hold their baby. Jessica didn't want to know the sex of of the baby until the birth, so I won't say anything.

I wanted to read mistress Anne's story for a while now and I was really excited about her story. She might have changed since the first time I met her, but she is still awesome. She is one of the most kick-ass ladies I had the pleasure reading about. The changes she goes through the story aren't unpleasant or unjustified. She becomes softer, but I still wouldn't turn my back on her, if I were her enemy. The changes are happening due to the type of relationship she truly wants and has with Ben.

Speaking of her relationship with Ben, when I first found out that Ben is a vanilla guy, I was curious about how things were going to work out between him and mistress Anne. I had recently read a book with a similar theme of the relationship between the characters and I wasn't completely satisfied with the result, so I wanted to read how Cherise Sinclair, an author who is the first person I recommend when it comes to BDSM book, would make things workout, while staying true to her characters. Without spoiling how things worked out fir these two, I will say that I liked how their nature was (she is a sadist domme and he is not a slave/mostly vanilla) and what they felt for each other. Things weren't quickly and easily solved.

About the first 1/3 of the book felt like it was dragging (or maybe I felt this way because Ben and mistress Anne weren't together) and the last ten chapters felt like they flew by. I hope Cherise Sinclair will publish another book in the series and it will be about Azuri. While I was reading the book, I realized how much the Shadowlands family has grown. And I don't mean the babies. I mean that first we had 6 masters and as the books were processing more characters were added. That's the case with the sixth book considering that it opened the door to w whole new world.
I am glad the series continued, but I still feel a little nostalgic about the old times. I wish we got more time with the subs from the first six books. I am demanding a novella with all of them (I won't demand separate novellas because I know that the author is not a robot, but a human being with a family and other books to publish).

  STT Teaser 2

Excerpt:

He’d lied to her because of his own fears.
They’d both messed up.
Oh, Ben.
Why had he told her he wanted to be her slave? Whatever had possessed him? She’d known he was almost vanilla. Had cautioned him because he was so new to the lifestyle. Told him he was rushing things.
Her eyes welled with tears. Her memory of that day was so clear, the joy she’d felt so brilliant. “I’ll be your slave.”
And because she remembered so well, she also recalled what had happened before. How Ben had handed her the phone.
Joey’d been on the line.
She froze as the puzzle came together.Oh. Damn.
After a long moment, she rubbed her hands over her face gently. Her skin felt fragile, as if a sudden movement might cause pieces to fall away.
Joey’d asked to be her slave again, and Ben had heard enough to worry.
She sighed, seeing how events had created the inevitability of this day. Because Ben wasn’t the sort of man who’d allow someone to poach his woman. If he’d been with her longer or understood more about the lifestyle, he’d have known he didn’t want a 24/7 submissive or slave relationship.
But Joey had forced his hand.
She’d been so stunned—“Yes, Ma’am, this is what I want”—and so filled with happiness, that she hadn’t questioned his motivation.
Then, as she tumbled into loving him, she’d seen only what she wanted to see. Love might be blind, but it was also deaf, dumb, and stupid.
She pressed her lips together. Her heedlessness had hurt them both.
Now what should she do?
A half-laugh escaped. The person she’d normally ask for guidance would be Ben. She rubbed her chest where the aching mass of bruised heart muscle hadn’t stopped throbbing. Heknew her. He’d have given her solid advice because he liked her the way she was.
With him, she’d been able to relax and not stay “on” all the time.
Was that because he didn’t need her to always be strong and invulnerable.
He was smart. Easygoing. Deadly. Competent. A survivor of the worst New York could throw at him and war, as well. He didn’t need her to make his decisions.
She blew out a breath, feeling like an idiot. Caught up in the way she always did things, she’d tried to make every choice for her, for him, for them.
He didn’t need her to be in charge.
What about her? Could she cope with a relationship where she wasn’t in control all the time?
Rather than an instant “no,” she heard only silence. As if the answer was…maybe. How odd.

Review: The Secret Sister (Fairham Island #1) by Brenda Novak

Rating: 5/5 stars
Publication Date: July 28th, 2015

Blurb:

Did she once have a sister? Has her mother lied all these years? Why?

After a painful divorce, Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham, the small island off the North Carolina coast where she grew up. She goes there to heal—and to help her brother, Keith, a deeply troubled man who's asked her to come home. But she refuses to stay in the family house. The last person she wants to see is the wealthy, controlling mother she escaped years ago.

Instead, she finds herself living next door to someone else she'd prefer to avoid—Rafe Romero, the wild, reckless boy to whom she lost her virginity at sixteen. He's back on the island, and to her surprise, he's raising a young daughter alone. Maisey's still attracted to him, but her heart's too broken to risk…

Then something even more disturbing happens. She discovers a box of photographs that evoke distant memories of a little girl, a child Keith remembers, too. Maisey believes the girl must've been their sister, but their mother claims there was no sister.

Maisey's convinced that child existed. So where is she now?

Review:

I can say that after some time, I have become someone who enjoys Brenda Novak’s books. I wasn’t expecting that considering my past experiences with her books. The secret sister is a captivating book despite a little slowness it might have. When I was forced to take a break from it (dead battery), my mind kept wandering to this story. I can say that I am satisfied with the way things ended, considering that the Secret Sister is a series and I will probably see Maisey, Rafe, Laney and the other characters again. I hope book two will be from Keith’s or Nancy’s point of view. Maye he and Nancy can be together. The answers to pretty much everything were given, but I still feel the need to revisit those characters. As always I want to see (more of) how the characters are fairing.

For some reason I was expecting Annabelle’s fate. I had a feeling that something similar had happened to her. That doesn’t mean though that I didn’t enjoy the book. I won’t comment further because I don’t want to accidentally spoil you. The questions for discussion were an unexpected and welcome surprise. They made me wish I was a member of a reading club because they were good questions. Now, I will have to force someone to read this book in order to discuss the questions.

Ending this review I have to say something for Laney. As it's mentioned in the blurb, Laney is blind. This blindness made me question a couple of things about how children without the ability to see grow up. I wondered how it's like growing up knowing that the sky is blue, but without what blue looks like. I have more respect and empathy for people like her. It must be very tough. Rafe explained what golden looks like by saying that it looks like the way sunshine falls. I loved how her blindness didn't affect Laney and how effortlessly she kept living her life.

“Do you enjoy the view?” King Edric asked. “The rains have made the gardens bloom, and it warms my heart to see it so.” “It is good to know that the gardener approves of the work.” Cyrene laughed lightly. “I have not gardened in a month’s time. I fear I can no longer call myself a gardener.” She remembered when she had told the king of her interest in gardening at the last feast day almost a week ago. After that dance, Queen Kaliana added a list of plants to her assignment, forcing her to reread every page she had already dredged through for information. It had wasted two entire days. “Perhaps I could change that,” he offered. He directed her down the staircase and into the courtyard below lit solely by the setting sun in the distance. Her stomach churned at the thought of him offering assistance to any of her needs. It was like what she had read in her children’s books of the tales of Leifs, and how one request would be necessitated by a much larger sacrifice. Her biggest sacrifice at the present moment was time. She wanted nothing more than to finish her work on agriculture and prove that she could get moved somewhere that involved traveling…and adventure. “On the contrary, My King, I am fully enthralled in my Affiliate duties, and believe that gardening would only distract me from my work.” “You cannot spare one afternoon to spend in my gardens?” His blue-gray eyes searched her face. “If you have half the green thumb you suggest, then it would be delightful to have you on the grounds.” She swallowed. “I really have much work to accomplish before we go on Processional.” “I could speak to the Queen and request it be lessened,” he whispered into the evening air. “No!” It was the first time he had ever admitted to discussing her with the Queen. Hearing him admit it aloud made her voice come out strangled. Cyrene missed her footing on the pebble path and stumbled forward a pace. Edric steadied her. He turned his body to face her in the middle of the garden, and her breath caught at the sight of him in the setting sun. “You do not wish me to speak to the Queen?” “I spoke out of turn. Please forgive me.” “I cannot forgive that which I do not understand. Did the Queen somehow offend you?” Cyrene shook her head. “I fear that the Queen does not…like me.” Edric laughed softly, taking one of her hands in his own. “Oh Cyrene, I believe that the Queen likes no one but herself.” Cyrene found that she, too, could laugh at his comment. “Now, tell me what the Queen has done to make you believe that she dislikes you.” “It’s nothing, my King.” She turned her face away from his. She couldn’t possibly tell him the real reason. “Enough to infuriate you, which is enough for me.” When she looked back up into his blue-gray eyes she felt that same magnetic pull between them. Somehow she had not realized how close they were standing. His hand felt warm against her bare skin. His body only a few inches away from her. His breath hot on her face. Her heart contracted in her chest, and she forced herself to respond. “She speaks of…of your interference, as if…as if you…” Time stretched between them, and she thought for a split second he might move even closer to her. She was rooted in place, captivated by his gaze. “Yes?” His other hand drifted to her waist, and she was suddenly on fire. Their breath mingled together as she murmured, “As if you favor me.” “And do you think that?” “I…” “Yes?” he asked, stepping closer. “I think you have your queen,” she breathed.

Excerpt:

Annie hadn’t thought she’d ever be warm again, but she was sweating when a coughing fit awakened her sometime around two in the morning. Her ribs felt as if they’d been crushed, her head pounded, and her throat was raw. She also had to pee, another setback in a house with no water. When the coughing finally eased, she struggled out from under the blankets. Wrapped in the scarlet cloak, she turned on the flashlight and, grabbing the wall to support herself, made her way to the bathroom.
She kept the flashlight pointed down so she couldn’t see her reflection in the mirror that hung over the old-fashioned sink. She knew what she’d see. A long, pale face shadowed by illness; a sharply pointed chin; big, hazel eyes; and a runaway mane of light brown hair that
kinked and curled wherever it wanted. She had a face children liked, but that most men found quirky instead of seductive. Her hair and face came from her unknown father¾“A married man. He wanted nothing to do with you. Dead now, thank God.” Her shape came from Mariah: tall, thin, with knobby wrists and elbows, big feet, and long-fingered hands.
“To be a successful actress, you need to be either exceptionally beautiful or exceptionally talented,” Mariah had said. “You’re pretty enough, Antoinette, and you’re a talented mimic, but we have to be realistic…”
Your mother wasn’t exactly your cheerleader. Dilly stated the obvious.
I’ll be your cheerleader, Peter proclaimed. I’ll take care of you and love you forever.
Peter’s heroic proclamations usually made Annie smile, but tonight she could think only of the emotional chasm between the men she’d chosen to give her heart to and the fictional heroes she loved. And the other chasm¾the one between the life she’d imagined for herself and the one she was living.
Despite Mariah’s objections, Annie had gotten her degree in theater arts and spent the next ten years plodding to auditions. She’d done showcases, community theater, and even landed a few character roles in off-off Broadway plays. Too few. Over the past summer, she’d finally faced the truth that Mariah was right. Annie was a better ventriloquist than she’d ever be an actress. Which left her absolutely nowhere.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips soars onto the New York Times bestseller list with every new publication. She’s the only four-time recipient of the Romance Writers of America’s prestigious Favorite Book of the Year Award. Susan delights fans by touching hearts as well as funny bones with her wonderfully whimsical and modern fairy tales. A resident of the Chicago suburbs, she is also a wife, and mother of two grown sons.

Excerpt

Releasing my hands, he pulls my dress over my head and runs his hands across my black bra and gives my breasts a quick squeeze. When he reaches my panties, he slides his hand inside and cups my pussy, sliding one, then a second finger inside of me. My eyes close momentarily while I absorb the exquisite feeling of him inside me. It’s been too long.

“That’s my vixen. Wet as fuck and just aching for me to make you scream. My fingers are the only ones that ever belong in your pussy, Cassidy.” Chuckling, he corrects himself, “Well, mine and yours. You know how much I love watching you finger yourself until you come.”

“Zack.” His name falls easily from my mouth as he continues to finger me. There’s no way anyone could ever make me feel as amazing as he does. He’s right—he’s the only one for me, the only one I could ever love. I know that more and more with every passing second we spend here, but I still have a secret to tell him.

One that will change everything.

As he slowly pulls his fingers out of me, he brings them to his mouth one by one, tasting each one slowly, savoring the taste of me on his tongue. It’s as if he’s enjoying his favorite dessert, the eroticism of the moment is heady.

“Fuck, I’ve missed tasting you on my lips, and I’ve really missed running my tongue along your sweet, tight pussy as you come all over my face.”

Suddenly, he flips me around, holding both wrists in a single hand above my head with my face against the wall. His teeth bite down onto my shoulder but he soothes the pain with a swipe of his tongue and with the touch of his kiss against it.
“Perhaps I should punish you for running. What do you think? What should the punishment be for delayed sexual gratification?” Zack’s punishments are filled with pleasure and just the thought of it makes me want him even more. With my history, there’s no spanking, but the exquisite pleasure he brings me while he has me tied up is incredible.
