I should have died.

I should have been forgotten.

But I didn’t, and I wasn’t.

Living the life most women only dream about, I was madly in love with my soulmate—Asher Valentine—amazing husband, loving father, and rock’s favorite kick-ass front man. A man who loved me every day, in every way, since we first met as teens. We were blessed with a beautiful daughter who was the light of our life. My all-female rock band was tearing up the charts.

Then tragedy struck, and I lost it all.

Now all I have is a stack of journals, an antique key, and a big black void where my memories should be.

Used to be.

And I have him—this man with wild hair, tattoos from head to toe, a soft voice, and an even softer touch that gives me butterflies. He’s clearly hopelessly in love with his wife.

I’m told that’s me.

But that wife is gone, and she took everything they once had, leaving me in her place.

A broken replacement. A new version that doesn’t quite fit.

I’m slowly falling in love with him, but will he ever truly love me? Or will he forever be in love with her, the phantom woman who haunts us both?

Review:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Asher is the 6th book in the Ashes & Embers series by Carian Cole. I have been waiting to read this book for more than a year and I was surprised to finally see it in my kindle. Asher has been a recurring character in the past books  (do people say that about characters in a book?) and the fans of the series know what Ember, his wife, was in a coma for many years. In this book is time for her to come out of the coma and find herself again.

As the little note underneath the GR blurb mentions, Asher has been faithful to her and he never slept with another woman which was something that I really loved. The heroine is his wife and this is the story of how they are slowly falling in love with each other again and build their lives after a horrible accident.

Or at least it should have been. Ember and Asher were two strangers that ended up together simply because they were told so. Asher was in love with the Ember of the past and the new Ember didn't even love herself. She didn't even have a lukewarm relationship with her daughter and later on, everything seemed to fall into place only because it had to. It felt forced and unnatural.

The book needed to be twice as long because the character development happened overnight and in a very rushed way. There is a part where Ember ghosts Asher and acts very weird all of which is told completely from his point of view and then she is like "I have finally found myself and this is Ember". We don't actually get to see her going through that process.

There is no real bonding between Asher and Ember. I tried to be empathetic towards her because waking up and not remembering anything is traumatic, but she never made an effort to form any kind of a relationship with anyone but the dog Asher got for her. Asher was chasing a ghost and while I liked how he was trying to get his life back, I felt like he wasn't seeing the new Ember.

We got two secondary characters and both of them had very interesting backgrounds. The author revealed that she plans to write books for both of them and I cannot wait! Redwood's character portrayal made him seem very creep and yet it still made me want to read his story. I will also read the rest of the series and the Torn duet. There was something about the book that kept me going.

The book had some good and some bad moments and I am not sure if I would recommend it or not.
