Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

It's Darcy Burke's turn to write the latest installment in the Wicked Dukes Club series. I can't believe we are on book four already! This every two weeks release schedule is spoiling me. The heroine of the story is already familiar to those who have read One Night of Surrender since she is the sister of the hero. I liked that there was such a close relation to the main characters of these two books because it gave me a better feeling of connection in the series. It's official that the "not your average HR heroine" is the main theme of the series since Viola dresses up as a man and goes to the Wicked Dukes Club in order to get information and one day write the kind of article she truly wants. Jack is a good hero, but his lady is stealing the spotlight and I think that he doesn't mind at all. He is supportive of her. I liked the shenanigans these two were into and in my opinion, they have the most well-developed relationship in the series so far. The book was very easy to read and the flow was good. I would recommend the title.

Excerpt:

Viola’s gaze kept straying to Mr. Barrett, who stood with a few other gentlemen near the table with the bottle of sand. Garbed in a perfectly tailored black coat with black breeches and a midnight-blue waistcoat, he presented an intimidating and alluring figure. She couldn’t seem to stop glancing in his direction.
He didn’t appear to be aware of her presence, not after looking right at her and walking away. Was he purposely ignoring her? It was probably for the best. And yet, she was vaguely annoyed.
“Pardon me,” she murmured before making her way slowly to the table next to the one where Mr. Barrett stood. She picked up a shell and held it to her ear.
“Do you hear the ocean?”
She turned her head to see Mr. Barrett had moved next to her. Not that she’d needed to turn to see who it was—she recognized the deep, seductive timbre of his voice.
Seductive?
“Yes.” She handed him the shell.
He put it to his ear, and a half smile tilted his lips. Viola’s chest tightened in reaction. “It’s magic,” he said before replacing the shell on the table.
“It’s actually the noise from the room gathering in the shell and bouncing back to your ear.” Why had she said that? Magic sounded rather charming.
He chuckled. “I know what it is. But I like to think it’s the ocean. I haven’t been there in some time.”
“I haven’t either.”
“I love its vastness and the never-ending rush of waves over the shore. It makes me think of how complicated and yet simple our world can be.”
“That’s rather contradictory,” she said, picking up a rock that had been smoothed by the waves he spoke of.
“Life is full of contradictions, wouldn’t you say, LadyViola?” He was referring to her disguise as Tavistock. She suppressed the urge to smile.
“It can be, yes. So this is why you couldn’t meet tonight?” she asked quietly.
“Yes. And it seems you weren’t available either.”
She put the rock back down and moved around the table so they could put some distance between themselves and other guests. “I hadn’t planned to come tonight, but then decided it was worth trying to learn anything I could about our…project.”
He nodded twice, slowly. “Yes, our project. We should perhaps develop a strategy for tomorrow night. I will ensure Pennington will be there.”
“Excellent, I do think he is our best hope for delving deeper into things. We need to find out how he heard this rumor.”
“Agreed. He typically likes to talk, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.”
Viola didn’t disagree, but she wouldn’t leave things to chance alone. “And if he’s being closemouthed, we’ll pour ale down his throat until he speaks.”
Mr. Barrett’s dark eyes widened very briefly. “You wish to get him drunk?” He kept his voice low.
Viola lifted a shoulder. “If we must.”
“Diabolical,” he said. “I like it. Tell me, Lady Viola, have you ever been drunk? It seems as though you must have, given your frequent visits to the Wicked Duke.”
“I am careful not to overimbibe. Indeed, I rarely finish an entire mug of Colehaven’s marvelous ale.” She shook her head with regret. “It’s a crime.”
He laughed. “Indeed.”
“To answer your question, yes. I have been drunk.” She narrowed her eyes at him, but not in anger or disgust. “That is not a question you should ask a lady.”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I should have said, ‘Tell me, Tavistock, have you ever been drunk?’” His eyes glowed with mirth, and she felt herself responding to his good humor.
She angled her head to a saucy tilt. “No.”
“So you’ve been drunk as Lady Viola, not as Tavistock.” He studied her intently, and her toes had the audacity to curl in her slippers. “Fascinating.”
“Only once—just to see what it was like.”
“You are a woman dedicated to investigation, it seems.”
She was more than impressed with his estimation. She was…flattered. “That is an excellent way to describe me.” She tried to think of how she would describe him and wasn’t sure. Not yet. But they’d be spending plenty of time together, probably. Unless they unraveled the entire mystery tomorrow night.
She realized she didn’t particularly want to. It might be fun to be on the hunt with Mr. Barrett.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Million Dollar Devil is the first book in the Million Dollar series by Katy Evans. The main characters are Lizzy and James. Lizzy is looking for a man to be the face of the new suit line her father's company is making and James makes Youtube videos where people dare him for like 500 bucks to do stuff and he does them.

My favorite hero from Katy Evans is Remy and James is no Remy material. He is the complete opposite. After a fight, he and Lizzy had he went on a business meeting and one of the women there was putting her hand on his tight and later on his erect cock and he allowed her to do that for the whole duration of the business meeting/dinner. Is that book boyfriend material? Having the "hero" of the story get horny after he allows another woman to touch him at 83% of the book? I don't think so. The book was mediocre at best before that and after that, it was a lost cause for me. The main characters were uninteresting and James barely spent any time with his brother which was weird. I was not happy with the book.

Excerpt:
He has a face that—until now—only existed in my dreams. Hard jaw, chiseled to perfection. Firm, plush, kissable lips. Sharp, pristine blue eyes that feel like lasers zeroing in on me. He catches my gaze, and the devil’s smile suddenly playing on his lips is worth a million bucks. That’s exactly how much it cost me. What this guy cost me. I would’ve paid so much more. It’s like he’s the only man in the room. Like he belongs here. Confidence oozes out of his every pore. Masculinity envelops him as perfectly as his custom black suit. He walks like he owns the place. My heart beats harder and harder for him. I can’t believe I got him to agree to this. Women are vying for his attention. His moves are smooth. Sophisticated. Elegant. “An autograph?” a young woman asks shyly. He takes the notepad and pen she extends and scribbles his name, his voice low and rough. “There you go.” Beneath all that polish is his raw masculine energy. The determination that brought him here. “James . . .” I halt him before we go any farther. “Whatever happens . . .” He looks at me. A thousand words lingering in his look. “I know.” But does he? I’ve fallen in love with my own creation. I polished a diamond, and now it’s flawless. Perfect. But it’s not mine to keep. He is not mine to keep. This elite world he’s about to join isn’t one he was born into. These fans only know him because of me. His place at the top? That’s not where I found him.

Review:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Work in Progress is the first book in the Cook County series by B.J. Harvey. From what I gathered, the series will focus on the Cook brothers and that's not a bad thing. I liked what I saw of these guys and if their books are like this one, I will also love the series.

Our characters, Jamie and April, had a very good story, even if it didn't begin in the right note. Jamie was drunk and trying to work on flipping the house which as you can guess was loud and bloody. April went over to complain about the noise and ended up giving him first aid. After that, there were one or two more incidents that almost ruined the potential relationship these two could have, but Jamie somehow was always managing to fix everything. April is a single mother and her son is quite present in the novel but doesn't take too much of the spotlight and his presence works in an organic way, which was pleasing.

What I liked the most about the book is that the characters are realistic. They are not perfect and they give off the impression that they could be living next door to you. I liked how April handled Jamie's behavior and how they talked things out like adults instead of just having drama into the story because it would have been easier. April was a good person and I liked her a lot. Jamie has a few hang-ups from his past, but he is trying to be the perfect person for April and her son and I couldn't help but appreciate that.

Overall, the book was good. I liked the main characters and the setting and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. The author did a great work with the book and I would recommend it!

“Jamie?”
“Yeah, buddy?”
“So, are you my new dad now?”
I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.
Before I’m able to find the power of speech again, he continues, “But you’re my boss too?”
I decide to play along. “Your boss?”
He nods. “At the house. Building and stuff.”
“Well, not exact—”
“So that makes you my dad boss then?” He has the most serious look on his face, and I’m totally out of my depth here.
“Um…” I look to the door, willing April to walk through it and save me.
“Dad boss then,” he says again with a nod. “That’s good. Means I can get more money now.”
I cough, reaching over to the nightstand to take a long, much-needed drink from my coffee cup. I say the only thing that comes to mind. “Sure thing, buddy.”
“Awesome,” he says, a huge smile transforming his face. “Then I can buy flowers for Mom, so the next time you break our garden, I can fix it and make her smile like you did.”
“That’s a great idea. Now… have you seen my pants?”
“Are you not wearing pajamas?” Without warning, he lifts the sheet covering me from the waist down. “Oh, you’ve got big boy boxers like me. Mommy says I can only wear them when I wear shorts though. Are you sure you wore pants last night? Maybe you wore shorts because you’ve got your big boy boxers on.” And thank fuck I kept them on before falling to sleep last night.
“I was definitely wearing pants. Do you want to look in the bathroom for me?”
“It’s okay. I don’t need to. I saw Mommy carrying them into the kitchen.”
“Lovely?” I yell, hoping she can hear me. When a loud beat starts coming from downstairs, my bullshit sensor starts pinging. April is up to something, especially since it’s the exact same Queen song I was playing the night we first met. Two can play this game.
“Should we go get pancakes?” I ask.
“Yeah!” he says, jumping up and down before running out of the room.
I move to the bathroom and use the facilities. Searching for my clothes, I come up empty. Sure enough, my pants have indeed disappeared. With nothing else left to do about it, I walk out of the bedroom and down the stairs, wearing nothing but my boxer shorts.
I stop still the moment I enter the kitchen. Just as I’d imagined, April is sitting at the dining table, coffee in hand, her legs up, her ankles crossed on a chair with a wicked smirk on her face. Her only saving grace is the huge plate of pancakes piled high in the middle of the table.
“Hey Ax, how’s breakfast?” I ask.
“So good,” he groans, stuffing another forkful of pancake in his mouth.
“What are you doing after school today?”
His head snaps up. “Nuff-thing,” he says with a mouthful of food.
“Good. I was thinking you could bring your mom and gran over and we could give them a tour of the house now that it’s finished.”
“Oh wow. Yeah,” he says, puffing out his little chest. “I can show them where I worked.”
“Yep,” I reply with a grin. With his attention back on his rapidly emptying plate, I move in front of April. ”You look good in my tee. Did you also find my pants on your travels?”
Her lips twitch. ”I thought I’d do some laundry.”
