Review: Wicked Player (Rough Riders, #3) by Stacey Lynn

WickedPlayer-SBPRBANNER-BT (1).jpg

Wicked Player, an all-new forbidden sports romance by Stacey Lynn is now live.

WickedPlayer-ebook

Gage Bryant has the best hands and the quickest feet of any wide receiver in football.
He also has a secret—one he’ll do anything to protect.
He’s a member of The Velvet Club. With airtight non disclosure agreements, playing at Velvet gives him the freedom to assert his dominance and control in a way that not only serves him on the football field, but the way he craves in the bedroom.
What he doesn’t expect is for his most recent partner to be one of the reporters assigned to follow him around in the weeks before he opens a new wing at the local children’s hospital.
When it’s clear Elizabeth Hayes has no idea he’s the man who had her blindfolded and bound beneath him, Gage realizes things just got a lot more interesting.
He can have her body at night, giving her all the pleasure she begs for in a way he needs. And he can keep his heart, as well as his identity, out of their encounters.
After all, the absolute worst thing that could happen would be to have this sexy little reporter reveal how wicked he truly is.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

To be completely honest here, I was surprised by how much we learned about Elizabeth's sexual past and preferences. Usually, the authors prefer to keep that side of a heroine hidden or barely mentioned and I was surprised (happily) to see that this wasn't the case with her. The author got some points for that.

I liked the book. It had a lot of strong moments and some of them were very emotional, which wasn't something I was expecting from a book that began with the main characters doing steamy stuff to each other (dang you Amazon for your language rules on reviews) without knowing who the other was. I liked that the author didn't drag the whole "I don't know who the other person is" thing for too long. It would make me question Elizabeth's investigating skills and Gage's sight.

I liked the writing and the pace of the book. When it comes to a Stacey Lynn book I usually end up not liking one of the main characters, but fortunately, that wasn't the case with this book, so I guess that from my perspective her writing has improved! I liked both, Elizabeth and Gage and their relationship. Overall, Wicked Player is a book that I would recommend. I liked pretty much everything about it, despite some not so good parts.

Excerpt:
I memorized his stats. Six-four, two hundred fifty pounds. Born in 1986. And then I stumbled on a photo spread he’d done for Men’s Health and my jaw dropped. Butt freaking naked. A football helmet held in front of him was the only thing covering him. And hot damn. This guy. Chiseled, strong jaw. Straight Roman nose. Piercing eyes. He was freaking gorgeous. My heart rate kicked into fast gear. My fingertips sizzled. I had to spend weeks following this guy around? The very idea sent a pulse of excitement to the tops of my thighs I tried to shake away. I couldn’t get a crush on this guy. He was a source. A story. But good grief to the high heavens, he was the most beautiful if stern looking man I’d ever seen in my life. “Holy shit,” I whispered, forgetting we worked in an open office and even though I was quiet, people could hear me. “What is it, Elizabeth?” That came from Amanda. “Oh dear. You got the Gage story?” She was already at my back, peering over my shoulder. “Man as sexy as that shouldn’t be allowed to walk free,” I said. “I know.” She laughed and bumped my shoulder. “He’s God’s gift to women that’s for sure. And yet from what I’ve heard, he’s never had a girlfriend, at least not one he’s gone public with.” “Really?” I twisted in my chair and faced her. “Never?” She shrugged. “Not in the four years he’s been here. And I’d know. Rough Riders are my team. I follow all of ‘em on Twitter and Instagram. He posts a pic and gets over four thousand comments, mostly from women, but to the best of my knowledge, he’s never been seen in public with a woman except his mom.” Wow. That was…that was crazy. Everything leaked. “Hmm,” I said, tapping my finger to my lips. “So I would imagine the public would want to know if he was involved, right?” She laughed lightly. “Yeah, but watch yourself. This is a hospital piece, not a gossip column. You go digging too far and you’ll blow your chance.”

Cover Reveals: Advice from A Jilted Bride & Birth of A Baby Daddy by Piper Rayne

What’s a girl to do after being ditched at the altar by text message? That’s right. Text. Message. How does she pick up the pieces and move on? I’m no Dear Abby but here’s a little free advice…
Advice #1 – First, purge your apartment of all things him—by tossing his belongings off the balcony.

Advice #2 – Do not, I repeat do not, throw anything out into the hallway because you’ll injure your hot new neighbor.

Advice #3 – When said neighbor brings over Chinese Food do not let him stay and keep you company. It’s awkward when you realize he’s your boss.

Advice #4 – Accept his offer to help you with your side business but think twice before using a date to his sister’s wedding as collateral.

Advice #5 – Investigate who your mystery neighbor really is. Don’t trust his word even if he’s the world’s best kisser. If you listen to nothing else, pay attention to that last one. It’s the most important and will save you a lot of heartache.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I would like to begin this review stating that I wouldn't mind if each book didn't begin one year after the previous one. Book 3 began with the third annual stipping by the guys and for some reason, it bugs me to have each story happen a year after the previous one ended especially when the stories and the whole falling in love thing happens in a span of a couple of months if not weeks. At least the author is publishing the books in a quick session and I am happy that I will get all the stories in a short time.

The story was a little rushed and I felt like Brandon didn't spend a lot of time with his daughter as he should have. The story is focused more on the parents and how they were going to have a happy ending. Things went rather smoothly and I was mostly happy with the story. The drama that was thrown in was not necessary and we could have lived without it. Other than that I am happy with the story we got and I can say that the author so far is doing a good job with the series.

I am still waiting for Sullivan and Lily and I hope that the next book will be about them. I would also like to see more of Sullivan's father. From what I gathered he is a good man. Grace's friend should also get a story because she was a fun character to read about.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

One tough cowboy is the first book in a brand new series by Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick and I can say that the series started with a bang! The story was mostly good. Somewhere in the middle of the book, I realized, that I had forgotten one major part of the plot and the reason why Sam returned to her home town. That reason was sort of pushed aside to make room for Sam and Hunter's relationship. They needed to have something solid before everything else happened. The last chapters were page turners and I couldn't put the book down. Some staff were very shocking and I almost stopped reading. Thankfully, a new arrival saved the day and my sanity. I wonder if that person will be a main character in the second book of the series. I will have to wait for that book to come out and find out myself. I will definitely continue with the series because the authors managed to write a good plotline that can be extended to many books and the secondary characters were interesting enough for me to want to read their stories. Sam and Hunter have a good relationship and from the first moment, sparks flew. I would recommend the book and I can't wait to see what the authors will come up with for the next story.

Review:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Flare up is the final book in the Boston Fire series, but it can be read as stand-alone. If you are familiar with the series you will be already familiar with Grant, Wren and the way she ghosted him. In this book, they will get their happily ever after and some things are not for fun for them. I will begin with the good stuff. I liked how everyone reacted to Wren been back to Grant's life. They are hesitant because she broke his heart, but happy at the same time because she is back and Grant is happy. Of course, trouble is after them and some things are not going so well, but love wins everything, right?

The bad thing is that the story felt a little flat to me and it could have used some kind of spark to make things a little bit more interesting. Since this is the last book in the series, I was expecting everything to go with a bang and give us a better insight into the couples of the previous books. The book wasn't bad, just not what I would have wanted as a series finale.

The apartment was small—one room and probably barely legal—so it only took a few seconds to follow the coughing to the person on the floor near the window. While Aidan did a quick check of the bathroom and under the bed to make sure there was nobody else, Grant crouched down next to the person he was pretty sure was a woman, despite having a throw blanket over her head.
Fire department,” he said. “Let’s get you out of here.”
Her cough was so weak and ineffectual, he didn’t bother asking if she could get up and walk. Instead he rolled her, intending to lift her and carry her out.
Then the throw blanket slipped away from a sleep-tangled mess of blonde curls, revealing dark blue eyes he saw in his dreams, and Grant’s world stopped.
Wren.”
He hadn’t seen her in five months, since she’d told him on the phone she didn’t want to see him anymore and then ghosted. No explanation. No compromise. Nothing but five months of a broken heart that hadn’t even begun to heal yet.
What the hell was she doing in this place?
Grant. Her mouth formed his name, though no sound got through her constricted throat. The grayish cast of her skin and lips terrified him, and he started to hoist her up.
Aidan was at his side. “I’ll carry her out.”
I’ve got her.” Despite the shock and pain from seeing her again, Grant wanted to hold her. He wanted to cradle her in his arms and feel that sense of contentment holding her had always brought him in the past.
There was no time for that. After draping her over his shoulder, he stood and headed for the door. It wouldn’t be a comfortable ride for her, but the only thing that mattered right now was getting her out of the building and to an ambulance, where they could give her oxygen. Her body had gone totally limp by the time he reached the stairs, but he refused to consider the possibility she’d need medical care beyond that.
They’d gotten there in time, and that’s all there was to it.
He heard voices in his radio and was aware Aidan stayed right behind him, but Grant didn’t stop moving until he hit the clear, frigid air.
He paused to get his bearings and then headed for the ambulances on standby. Some of those voices in his radio must have warned them he was coming, because Cait opened the back of her truck and waved at him.
Cait Tasker was not only an EMT, but she was engaged to Gavin Boudreau, who was Grant’s best friend and with the Ladder 37 crew. E-59 and L-37 were parked side-by-side in the firehouse and always rolled out together, so Gavin was on scene, too. And Cait knew Wren. The four of them had spent a lot of time together before Wren walked away from him and didn’t look back.
By the time he reached the ambulance doors, he could feel her stirring. Not a lot, but she had to be breathing in order to regain consciousness and that was enough for now.
Because it was so damn cold and she was small, they didn’t bother with the stretcher. He handed Wren up to Cait’s partner, Tony, who turned away with her.
Oh my God, Grant.” Cait looked at him, her expression mirroring his thoughts. “What the hell was Wren doing living here?”
I don’t know. She’ll be okay, right?”
We’ll take care of her. Are you okay?”
He didn’t answer. As he watched Tony fit a mask over Wren’s face, her eyes met his and, no, he wasn’t okay.
Questions tumbled through his mind. Why was Wren living in this place? Why had she disappeared from his life so abruptly? How could she still be in the city and not miss him enough to at least send a text message?
Had she known he’d been days away from buying her a ring and asking her to spend the rest of her life with him?

Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Work in Progress is a brand new stand-alone book by Staci Hart. The story goes pretty much as the blurb describes, but the whole fake marriage plot happens slowly and later than I thought it would. That gives a chance to our characters to get to know each other before the feelings develop which is good I guess. The book overall was good and very enjoyable. I liked the main characters and I was a little disappointed by the way Thomas acted when it mattered. Amelia was more dedicated and loyal and that was all it mattered. I don't have a single complaint about her character and I liked her growth. The book could belong in the opposites attract/enemies to lovers category since Amelia has never given more than 3 stars to any of Thomas' books. She is a blogger, he is a writer and sometimes those things don't mix.

The book might be a stand-alone but, two secondary characters will get a story (yay for us!) and I have to say that the author tried to keep a secret in the epilogue, only to reveal it in the excerpt for the next book. I am happy for the couple and I will read their book, but I found it weird that the identity of the second person was kept a secret when we will find it out so soon when we pick their book.

Excerpt:

The hall bathroom door opened, consequently stopping the earth’s orbit and flinging me into space for lack of gravity. Thomas Bane stepped out of the doorway in slow motion, propelled by a cloud of steam that licked at his glistening body like it wanted to taste him. His hair was black, wet, curling and dripping in rivulets down the planes and valleys of his expansive chest and abs and narrow hips. He had that thing, the trough of muscle bracketing his hips that caught sluicing water and carried it in an angle that would eventually reach that unknown terrain beneath his towel. I saw the ghost of that terrain, the long, cylindrical bulge that was substantial enough to clearly state its presence, even through the thick towel. He smirked, dragging his hand through his wet hair. I salivated, watching droplets of water roll down his forearm and collect on the tip of his erotic elbow. “You’re up,” he said. I blinked, not knowing when I’d set my coffee down or how many minutes—hours? years?—had passed in the time I spent ogling his body. He sauntered into the room like he wasn’t basically naked. I tried unsuccessfully not to stare at his knees, the place where his ropy thigh connected, the angular muscles of his calves, the curve of his ankle, the broad pad of his foot. He was perfectly proportioned. Michelangelo would have carved him twenty feet tall, and women would have worshipped at his perfect feet. Gus bounced when he saw Tommy, his toys forgotten. And when Gus took off running, Tommy stopped, eyes widening and hands splayed in front of him. “Gus, no,” he commanded. To no one’s surprise, Gus did not listen. He barked once, snagged the hem of Tommy’s towel, and whipped it off him in a single tug that exposed every inch of skin on Thomas Bane’s ridiculous body. Thank God my coffee was already on the counter. I’d have gotten third-degree burns. For a split second, Tommy was frozen there in all his natural glory, poised to run after his dog, his face drawn and eyes locked on the sweet, disobedient dog. He wasn’t paying any attention to me. I, however, gave him my full and undivided consideration. His thighs were a mass of muscle so hard and defined, the tops were planes that came to a notch at his knee and a point where it met his hip. My eyes caught that trough that had before disappeared and followed it where it pointed—straight to the thatch of dark hair and the member nestled there. The very thick, very long, mostly limp member. If I stared at it a second longer, I was going to faint—my vision was already dim, my pulse pumping so hard, I could feel it in my neck, at the back of which a cold sweat had broken. But he shifted to run after Gus, who was galloping away, trailing the towel behind him. “Dammit, Gus! Gimme that!” Then it was the back of him I saw, his hair, the streaming water rolling down all the curves of his shoulders, his back, the valley of his spine, and down to the most perfect ass I’d ever seen in real life. Well, the only ass I’d ever seen in real life that wasn’t my own, and even that I couldn’t get a good look at without a mirror. Seriously, that ass. That perfectly sculpted ass, round and tight and curved in the sides, shifting from one side to the other as he ran after the damn dog. My gaze caught a tattoo on one ass cheek, and I squinted at it, trying to make it out. Tommy bent to snag the end of the towel—I caught sight of his sack and almost dissolved through the floor in an acidic puddle of embarrassment—but when he pulled, Gus spun around, ass in the air and tail wagging as he growled, pulling back. A string of obscenities left Tommy’s mouth, but I was still gaping and staring at his ass. I realized that I was laughing. It sounded like someone else in a different room. I wondered absently if this was how it felt to have a stroke.
