A Man of His Own by Susan Wilson

Rating 5/5 stars
Pub. Date September 24th 2013

Blurb:

Rick Stanton was a promising professional baseball player with dreams of playing in the major leagues and starting a family with his young wife, Francesca, when World War II changed everything.  Rick returns from the war with his body broken and his dreams shattered.  But it was not just body and spirit he sacrificed for the war. He and Francesca volunteered their beloved dog, Pax, for the Army’s K-9 Corp, not knowing if they’d ever see him again.

Keller Nicholson is the soldier who fought the war with Pax by his side, and the two have the kind of profound bond that can only be forged in war.  Pax is the closest Keller has to a sense of family, and he can’t bear the thought of returning him to the Stantons.  But Rick and Francesca refuse to give him up.  Instead, an arrangement is made: Keller will work as Rick’s live-in aide. And thus an unlikely family is formed, with steadfast Pax at the center.   As they try to build a new life out of the ashes, Keller and Francesca struggle to ignore their growing attraction to each other, and Rick, believing that he can no longer give Francesca what she needs and wants, quietly plans a way out.

All three of them need healing. All three of them are lost. Pax, with his unconditional love and unwavering loyalty, may be the only one who can guide them home.

Review:

I can see this book becoming a movie. Just imagine it. 3 people who are dealing with situations that can't control and try to live their lives. Kellen who was never loved and was always alone in the world and fells like he has some kind of a family with the Stantons, Rick who is forced to lose his carrer, legs and arms during the war and later almost his family and life and Francesca a woman who has almost lost her husband and tries to help him even though he is unwilling.

But this isn't their story exactly. This is about Pax, a dog. He is Kellen's family during and after the war, Rick's aid while he is hopeless alone and Francesca's company while her husband is at the war. There is even his point of view.

It is not my usual romance. Honestly I can't find the words to describe my feeling for this book. I know that it was a great read for me and hard to dislike. The pace was good, the writing simple but not in a bad way the epilogue moving and (because I know that some readers ask for it) there was character development.

Shadowland (The Immortals #3) by Alyson Noel

Rating 2/5 stars
Pub. Date November 17th 2009

Blurb:

Enter the realm of the Immortals - the #1 New York Times bestselling series that's been acclaimed as breathtaking, mesmerizing, flawless and extraordinary.

Ever and Damen have traveled through countless past lives - and fought off the world's darkest enemies - so they could be together forever. But just when their long-awaited destiny is finally within reach, a powerful curse falls upon Damen...one that could destroy everything. Now a single touch of their hands or a soft brush of their lips could mean sudden death - plunging Damen into the Shadowland. Desperate to break the curse and save Damen, Ever immerses herself in magick - and gets help from an unexpected source - a surfer named Jude.

Although she and Jude have only just met, he feels startlingly familiar. Despite her fierce loyalty to Damen, Ever is drawn to Jude, a green-eyed golden boy with magical talents and a mysterious past. She's always believed Damen to be her soul mate and one true love - and she still believes it to be true. But as Damen pulls away to save them, Ever's connection with Jude grows stronger - and tests her love for Damen like never before....

Review:

The series seems to go from worse to worse. I will state what I didn't like below.

Ever`s "friend" Heaven. She makes some appearances and there isn't a single one that you can see her acting as a good friend. I wanted to slap her most of the time.

Was the triangle really necessary? We know that Damien and Ever are forever. Why Judd had to be a part of all this? he seemed good. Noel dont make me hate him.

Ever's inability to do something right. Somehow every time she tries to help someone or cast a spell she messes up and as a result bad things happen.

I have a bad feeling for the story and the way it goes. I am afraid it`s going to get worse. Not many authors have the ability to do that.

Ties (Lengths #4) by Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt

Rating 4- /5 stars
Pub. Date August 26th 2013

Blurb:

Ties is a companion book in the Lengths series NOT a sequel. It was written as a stand-alone title. The other books do not need to be read prior to Ties in order to follow the story.

When a shiny new convertible arrives for her twenty-first birthday, Hattie Beckett has had enough of her absent dad trying to buy a place in her life. It’s time for him to face her--or get out of her life forever.

She tosses some clothes in a bag, looks up her father’s last known address, and sets her GPS for Silver Stand, California.

When she arrives at a beach-bum paradise that’s totally foreign to her New England upbringing and finds nothing but an empty lot where her dad maybe once lived, her immediate instinct is to pack up her car and head right back to Connecticut.

But she also finds... Deo. The half-brother she never knew she had. He and his hippy-dippy mom insist that Hattie stick around—at least for the summer. And with all of her friends spending the summer abroad, what else does she have to do?

Her ideas about family are blown wide open as Deo and Marigold pull her in with their charm and love. But there’s still a huge question mark where her dad is concerned, and that question mark definitely looms over her ideas about love and relationships.

When Hattie meets Ryan, the college dropout turned competitive sailor, her perspective flips with her heart. Like it or not, Hattie is falling fast and hard for Ryan... even if it’s the last thing that she expected - and the last thing her newly found brother wants for her.

Liz Reinhardt was born and raised in the idyllic beauty of northwest NJ. Review:

I haven't read the previous books (yet as it seems), thank God this is a stand alone.

Another read for me where the female character tries to push the hero away. I understand Hattie's reasoning but I think that in the end she became what she didn't want to be. Her mother. She gave him up because she thought that leaving him was for the best. Her mother didn't ask for more from her father because was a free spirit. After seeing her father I am glad they never got married.

Most of the characters are known from the previous books. What I didn't understand was the Ryan-Whit-Deo thing. From the blurb of the first book (Lengths) I could see that Ryan and Whit where friends with benefits but I could get why they weren't speaking anymore and there was a big fuss about them. If anyone has read Lengths can please tell me what happened?

Hattie has her rules and is a little control freak. Ryan is an ex man-whore, now celibate who tries to convince her that he is worth.

I liked every single character. I am most definitely going to read the previous books soon. This book is a great idea for a summer read. It's quick, without anything heavy and a hot leading male.

Excerpt :

RYAN

The bottom of her foot on my leg is sexier than all the body rubs I ever got from the girls I met out at the bars.
“I don’t know. If that does happen, it’ll be collateral damage.” I finish the last foamy dregs of my beer. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
She presses her lips together. “But this isn’t a sure thing, right? I don’t mean to be a downer, but there’s a chance you might not win. Do you still have a career if you’re not number one?”
Her insistence on getting right to the bloody, pulpy heart of things is refreshing...even if I’m hemorrhaging a little.
“Yeah. I mean, you have to be competitive, you have to come in ahead of your times. But there’s room for an okay segment of the racing population to make some money.” I watch her watch me, and I’m searching her face for clues about how she interprets all this, but she’s stone-cold, just thinking.
I’m relieved as hell when Jovan comes over to clear the plates. Hattie turns down dessert, which I try to tell her is a huge mistake, but she says that there’s a line between enjoying your meal and gluttony, and she’s got to draw her line in the sand.
I leave Jovan a crazy tip and thank him. He presses the wine bottle into my hand. “Bring that one back.” He nods down the hall, where Hattie’s disappeared to use the bathroom. “She’s exactly what you need.”
“I’ll be lucky if I can talk her into a second date. It was hard work getting her to come out this time,” I tell him.
Jovan leans close. “She’s worth the work.”

Enduring Light (The Afterglow Trilogy #3) by Alyssa Rose Ivy

Rating 3.5/5 stars
Pub. Date August 20th 2013

Blurb:

Fighting darkness takes light.
Desperate to save James, Charlotte scours Energo for answers with Calvin and Liam at her side. Kevin and Samantha head to Alaska to find the one item that might destroy Blake, but the search is only the beginning.
As time runs out, Charlotte and Kevin discover that keeping Energo from eternal darkness will take a sacrifice no one expects.

Review:

I haven't read the previous two books even though this is not a stand alone. I didn't have any problem but I am sure I missed something about the world the book is set. Also I can't compare it to the other books. I was wrong when I thought I couldn't pick sides in the triangle. I liked Liam and I thought Calvin was cold and distant. As usual I did not liked the female character, Charlotte, but Samantha was good. What I liked was the way the triangle problem was solved. It was a little cruel though and probably some fans will get mad and disappointed. I found it kinda romantic.

I am sure if I would suggest the series to a friend because a part or two just didn't work ot for me. I would have liked it if the author explained why Charlotte was in love with Liam and Calvin at the same time. I wouldn't say no to a better epilogue. The author seems promising.

Authors bio:

Rating 5/5 stars
Pub. Date July 9th 2013

Blurb:

After a year of partying, Sam decides to buckle down and focus on college. Things are going great until a one-night stand leaves her pregnant and alone. Raising a child while going to school isn’t easy, but Sam is determined to be strong for her daughter. She doesn’t have time for guys or relationships, and takes great care to protect her child and her heart.

Judd doesn’t fit the mold of a college ballplayer. His long hair and tattoos may fit the life he’s created for himself, but baseball is the one thing he takes seriously. When he meets Sam, he’s immediately drawn to her curves and refusal to put up with his crap. When Judd learns the truth, can he handle the responsibility that comes with loving a single mother?

Sam yearns for the fire that Judd fuels in her, but her child’s needs have to come first. Can two people at different stages in their life find a way to make a life together?

Review:

This book belongs to the sweet category. It doesn't have over the top drama. To me it seemed that Sam and Judd had a realistic relationship than the ones someone will usually read. Maybe the last two chapters made me think that. Don't ask me why I think that, I just do. If you are a YA reader you will love this or a romance reader in general.

Judd was very sweet and caring and not the guy you expect someone to be when he is in college and in the baseball team. Tucker is an a- hole if you ask me. Sam is a good mother and a good person. I enjoyed this book and I hope you will too. It was a quick read and a pleasant way to spend my time.

By A Thread (By A Thread #1) by R.L. Griffin

Rating 1/5 stars

Pub. Date March 15th 2013

Blurb:

Stella's future was set, and it was a bright one. She was engaged to a man she adored, and was headed to law school in the fall. Tragically, her perfectly planned future ends just as it was beginning.

With no ties to family or friends, Stella finds herself alone in a new city, spiraling out of control. Her typical day comes to a close with her passed out on the floor; sometimes clothed.

Luckily, her new roommate, essentially a stranger, is dead set on getting Stella past her grief and back to functioning within society. Putting one foot in front of the other, she climbs up from the bottom of a bottle. Even with all her progress, Stella walks through life unfeeling, numb. Defiant, she sends out warning signals for the world to keep away. But, is that what she really wants?

With the steadfast help of a few tight knit friends, she gradually begins to feel again. She starts to savor the flavor of food again; lets herself notice how the handsome bartender glances at her. Still, after allowing herself a fling, she wonders if she will ever be able to let go of her shattered past, fully enjoy the present, or get over what she thought would be her perfect future and with the man who destroyed her heart.

Review:

I would like to say that I lost hours of sleep because I had to read this and now in 7:15 in the morning I regret it. This is not a book that is worth losing your sleep over.

I did not liked the book. Stella was pissing me off 9.9 out of 10 times. She must be the character that I have ever hated the most in a book. She was a coward, shelfish, stubborn and self-destructive. I wanted to throw something at her just in case she woke and realised what she was doing. Am I the only one who disapproved her constant drinking habits (she spend the half book drank and the other half drinking) and the way she was treating George?

Stella's life was holding in by a thread. George help her and the thread to keep on. He helped her when she needed help.

Also she seemed to be the "perfect woman" for a guy. She was hot (I must have read that a least 100 times), wanted no strings attached sex, watched sports game and she was actually a part of a team, she was drinking beer and everything and many more. The only thing that was missing was her been a gamer.

I thought more than once to stop reading the book but I wanted to see who shot her. And thank God for my guess and the first couple of chapter of Tension that confirmed to me who did it. People die. But they don't always stay dead. The prologue needs to be removed. It has no connection with the rest of the story. From what I have seen this prologue should be a prologue to the next book.

I don't see the purpose of the book. I will give the second book a chance because you never know. To be honest I didn't really liked the characters in this book. Everyone was acting in a not so good way or were hiding something.

CHEMISTRY WAS NEVER THIS SEXY IN HIGH SCHOOL.

Cara Donovan’s summer tutoring job is turning out to be a challenge—and not just because of her troubled twelve-year-old student. It’s his uncle Josh who’s the real problem. If problem is the word for an irresistibly cocky, muscle-bound rancher with a taste for tight Levi’s and shameless flirtation. . . .
Cara is nothing like the wallflower Josh King remembers good-naturedly teasing in high school. This Cara is gorgeous, confident, fun. From the moment the fiery teacher steps foot on his family’s Lazy K Ranch, the stubborn playboy is determined to corral her. So what happens when his luscious lover takes over the reins?

The first in a steamy trilogy, Kristen Proby’s enthralling novel is filled to the brim with one hardworking family’s triumphs and challenges, all the wild adventure of the modern West, and a whole lot of titillating fun.

EXCERPT:
“Where are your jeans?” Josh asks as he meets me at my car the following morning.
“These are jeans.” I pull my tote bag out of the car and walk toward the front door of his house. “Is Seth here yet?”
“No, he’ll be a few minutes. I have him feeding the dogs at the big house.”
“Okay.”
“Those are not jeans.” He’s scowling down at my denim shorts like they’re the devil incarnate.
“They’re denim.
He narrows his chocolate eyes at me, but I see the humor there, and the butterflies take up residence in my belly again.
I love riling this guy up.
“Fine, they’ll have to do. Go ahead and get settled, Seth will be here in a minute. I have to ride out with a few of the guys to repair a fence, so I’ll see you at lunch time.” He pulls on some gloves and settles his green baseball cap on his head backwards again.
“You don’t wear cowboy hats?” I ask without thinking.
“Not usually. I have one, if you’d rather I wear it.” He smirks.
“No, just curious,” I mumble and head toward the house.
“Don’t leave before I get back. I have plans for you.”
He grins wide, winks, and saunters off toward the massive barn that sits between his house and the big house.
Well, isn’t that view nice? His Levi’s hug his ass perfectly and sit low on his hips, and as he walks I can see his buttocks and thighs flex.
Dear God, I’m lusting after a rancher.

Blurb:

Garrick Taylor and Bliss Edwards managed to find their happily-ever-after despite a rather . . . ahem . . . complicated start. By comparison, meeting the parents should be an absolute breeze, right?
But from the moment the pair lands in London, new snags just keep cropping up: a disapproving mother-in-law-to-be, more than one (mostly) minor mishap, and the realization that perhaps they aren't quite as ready for their future as they thought.
As it turns out, the only thing harder than finding love is keeping it.

Review:

This is the only book in the series that cannot be read as stand alone. The story takes place some time after Faking it. Bliss and Garrick are engaged now and it's meet the parents time!

Garrick comes from a family with money and his parents have the bad behaviour rich people have. When Bliss met them I didn't like them because they seemed so cold and like they didn't thought her good enough for their son. But in the end I liked his mother a little.

I was really happy when I found out that a novella with Garrick and Bliss would be released. I was fangirling. I loved them from Losing it and I couldn't miss a chance to see them again. Both, Garrick and Bliss, are more mature now, happy and in love. They know what they want and how to get it.

My favorite part was in the end when Bliss proved how well she knew Garrick and how the only thing she cared about was him. She prevented him from making a horrible mistake.

Nothing earth shattering happens but if you have read and liked Losing it you wouldn't want to miss this. For me keeping her was a nice change because for once the couple was already in love and happy. This isn't something that happens really often to me
